(SCRUTATOR)

What was it which drew and bound together the first followers of Jesus of Nazareth? What was the centre and heart of the Chris tianity which arose 2000 years ago? What was the religion which arose out of the heart of the best traditions of an- clent Judaism? How did it come to give us the beautiful story of the birth infancy and childhood of Jesus?

Christianity began in Palestine, among poor and simple people, as a new way of life which included thought as well as conduct, and which was based upon an absolute trust in the life of Jesus of Nazareth

survived to the present day. The things which they stress are the real humanity and divinity of Christ. His humanity is emphasis ed because men were tempted to doubt it and to make of Christ simply another demi-goa,

LIFE OF JESUS

Little groups of men and women, their writings, some of which have who had known and heard and followed Jesus the Teacher and healer and preacher in Judea and Galllee, strengthened in their faith by his resurrection, sought to teach others the things which they knew and believed. First they taught their fellow hations, then Gentiles. until the teaching spread the whole of Asia Minor, and over into Greece and Italy. Thus, the first little churches of Jesus grew, and spread, obscure and humble com- panies of people whose only bond of union was their love for Jesus. FOLLOWERS OF "THE WAY" At first these men and women were known as followers" of "the "way." It

In the Orst place. the story of the life of Jesus was handed down directly by oral tradition from

those who had seen and known him. In the second place, besides letters written by Christians, es- pecially by Paul, there were un- doubtedly other written narratives concerning his life and teaching in th Aramate language, which is the language which spoke. Luke says that there were many of these narratives and that it is his ambition to collect and bring them into a clearer order.

was under this name that they were persecuted by Saul of Tarsus, then a ferce Pharisee. But a little later. about twelve years after the crucifixion, when the Gospel had spread to such an. extent that it became clear that the future of Christianity was something larger than a Jewish" sect, the followers became known great. as Christians "first in Antioch." It known him and heard was thus that a new and imperish-speak were dying, and so there able word came into human langu-

age.

Christianity then. did not make Christ, it was Christ who Re: Christianity. The Christian rc- ligion is founded upon the reality of Christ--the reality of Jesus who born in Bethlehem in the reign of Ceasar Augustus, shortly before the death of King Herod the Great; who lived with his parents at Nazareth for about thirty years, who then came forth to a shor but glorious ministry of teaching and healing, and who was cruci- fed at Jerusalem during the gov ernorship of Pontius Pilate, and of whose survival after death his dis- ciples were convinced. On

the truth of this person the disciples rested their faith and staked their Ilves. They followed him not only as the Jewish Messiah. but as their Master and Saviour in life. as the Revealer of God the Father, and the Mediator of a new coven- ant between God and man.

That this is the true attitude of the first Christians is plain from
