BRIGHTER COLOURS IN TABLE
LINEN
Linen manufacturers have em- barked on brighter schemes in colour and design for autumn linens.
Conventional tablecloth patterns. including the Greek key, and spot patterns and also many new de- signs are woven in bright colour- ing. softened with an undertone in the same colour or contrasted with Ivory or cream.

A new soft deep red has appear- ed, contrasted with an off-white. A deep Royal blue dull-surfaced linen design is woven with a pat- tern of fine lines of ivory white cord running down the centre. and lightened with ivory tints in the border. This design looks well on a refectory shaped table, and forms an unusual and striking setting for the plain ivory white dinner ware so much in vogue..
This deep shade of blue with white table ware is one of the coolest looking of hot day settings for the meal table.

ways holds its own, notwithstand- ing the trend for variety in colour- ful table arrangements.
Smaller cloths for tea time carry on the theme of beauty in colour. fabric and embroidery. Some of the new tea table cloths are like Indian muslins in fineness of tex- lure, and are bordered with gin- broideries that have the look of the Ortent.
Others. of plain sheer white linen have shadow embroidery de- coration, in a muslin applique worked with pin stitching.
This type of embroidery is much used as a decoration for the'llgater dinner and lunch mat sets, Even cheeked peasant linens of the finer variety have tiny dower desigrs embroidered at intervals on the white squares. All have the daintiest of napkins to match..
Pastel-Coloured lunch and din- ner mat sets of soft cord Unen are fringed at the edges. A new braid edging is used for heavier linen sets In deeper colours. An ochre gold and ivory braid in a Victorian looped design used with copper brown linen is one effective colour scheme in these more Hchly tinted. linens.

The Coming Season
Future fashions are being launched in Paris and the, new fabrics will be seen made up 33 dresses, writes a Paris- correspon- dent. The woollen miaterials for the coming season are equally divided between rough and smooth. surfaces. Fabrics which have fine ribs running in diagonal and per- pendicular lines come from Rodier's collection. Fine serges and jersey weaves are in favour. These also give an effect of finely woven lines.
e new tweeds are soft in colour. and their designs are blurred. Dark blue and mauve mix well with a lighter shade of powder; blue, while browns and ereens look nice together.

LANE CRAWFORD'S
There is a wonderful display at Lane Crawford's this week of the very latest. in Scandale and Gossard belts. These models are made of washable elastic net woven In with lastex yarn. They are un- rivalled for the hot weather wear,. cool yet firm. Fitting closely to one's ngure, there is yet plenty of freedom and comfort.
Many of the new materials are hand-woven. Sometimes this is necessary to give them an irregular surface, but frequently it is a question of design. A Rodier weaver working at the Paris Exhi- bition can be watched weaving a heautiful Persian design by hand. It takes him a day to produce half a yard of this material. Kamly is 11 new woollen fabric which re- sembles camel-hair cloth: Winter coats will be made of this material in the natural sandy colour or dyed In fashionable shades. Check woollen stuffs are intended for travelling coats. The designs' are very indistinct for these checks. Meyer's woollen materials are. knopped in broad checks with dark colours upon everi darker grounds. Bottle-green knopping
up a black cloth gives, an idea of this trend. Bright colours are right for smaller checks. Gally checked dots 'make neat motifs upon black grounds whether of wool or silk.

Although woolen materials for e day wear are quiet in colour, the silks for evening dresses gleam with gold and silver threads. Lames and brocades are going to be fashionable during the coming months and the heaviest metal. fabrics fall in supple folds, The, metal gauzes from Coudurier and Ducharne are light as gossamer. Some are plain, others striped or frosted and goffered. Lamés show- ing canvas and serze weaves are unusual. The metal matelassés have designs in relief which appear

kind have more definitë motifs and their surfaces are usually dull. Stiff shiny satins will be WOIN again this winter. Coudurler makes a "rayon" satin which is as heavy as real silk Duchess satin. Other shiny sutina are reversible with duli crêpe backs, or they are woven with reflected designs which look like the reflections of smooth furs.
If fashionable women all over the world are cold next winter they will have to thank French labour legislation and the strikes at Lyons, writes a Paris correspon- dent. What has happened has been revealed by the shows ci what are called the winter "colles, tions," which are now being held by the leading French dressmakers in this torrid heat. Many of the winter.frocks are made of muslin, tulle, and thin printed taffeta, and this is the reason. These materials should have been delivered by the makers Iri time to be used for making the summer models; but the delays caused by the Introduc tion of the forty hour week and the disturbances in the factories caused the delivery, to be put off until it was too late,
The dressmakers have now, used,
the stuff to make the winter models, where weight has been supplied almost exclusively by the
Introduction of black velvet which was in stock, as it has always been considered to be as suitable' for summer as for winter. I sup-. pose one day fashion will catch up with the seasons once more.
