Sir John Simon, Chancellor of the Exchequer, at a National Goy--| ernment demonstration at Car- marthen declared that the latest figures of employment were the highest ever recorded,
"Practically every Industry and every area show this improvement including the Special Areas," he said. "Wages are continuing to rise. There was a further increase last month of £5,000,000, making the total increase this year up to £20,000.000.
"This working-class population Is preparing for Its August holiday. It has never crowded into the trains and sought the seaside In greater comfort or in better spirits.
"After generations of neglect, farming is being given its proper place in the national economy. Our principal object is to put agriculture on its own feet by en- couraging better organisation, by promoting marketing schemes, and now by improving the fer- tility of the soil and the health of cattle."
Sir John called on all that was progressive in, the historic party. of progress to seize the oportunity of making its weight, felt on the side of the National Government.
"In this Spanish dusiness," he continued, "we have done every- thing to limit this conflict so that there shall not be such interven- tion as will result in this confag- ration spreading outside. There is no man who would like us take a more reckless line, whatever out sympathies. We believe this matter has to be settled by the Spanish people."
