Observations, states the British Resident, Indicate that peat land will carry a paying crop of pinos much longer than the pineapple areas, of Johore and Singapore.
A comparative test by the can- ning officer of pines of similar type from the quartzite hill area at Dengkil and peat at Tanjong Dua- blas disproved the theory previous ly held that it was not possible to obtain a fully golden product from pines grown on peat soil, but showed that they are inferior in flavour. An analysis of the two types of fruit by the Soils Chemist Indicated a marked difference in composition, and experiments are now being carried out to see whe ther it is possible to improve the flavour of pines grown on peat by manuring.

FISHING
The coastal population of Keian- tan lives mainly by fishing except when high seas are running during the North-East monsoon period and it is too rough for them to put out. Thus states Mr. G.A. de C.
de Moubray, M.C.8.. in the Annual Report on the Social and Economic Progress of the People of Kelantan, for the year 1936.
Even during this monsoon per- lod a small quantity of Ash is, however, caught by means of cas- ting-nets. In fair weather the fishermen, who are all Malays, put out to sea either for the #hole day or the whole night and catch their fish chiefly by means of seine nets, each net usually handled by small fleet of five boats.
Most of the fish caught, adds Mr. de Moubray, is sold fresh at the different markets and consumed locally, but some is also exported in the form of dried fish.
