PINEAPPLE
CANNING
INDUSTRY
PROGRESS MADE IN
MALAYA
During the past few years, ex- traordinary progress has been made" in the Malayan pineapple canning industry, comments the "Malaya Tribune." It is not so very long ago since pineapples were marketed haphazardly, without regard for the requirements the buyers. Hawali was far, and away in the lead as far as the pineapple market was concerned,
af better. chiefly...because ganisation and more adequate sales organisation.
CT-
Since Malaya has given serious attention to this matter, however, we found ourselves rapidly mak- ing up for lost time, and reports from Home as to the reception accorded to the Malayan pine have been very encouraging Indeed. We have bullt new factories, In- stalled new machinery. and have devised legislation for the proper conduct of the factories.
A most important factor, and one which has received great at- tention recently, has been 'the con- ditions under which the fruit is prepared. The report on the in- dustry contained in the current issue of the Malayan Agricultural Journal" refers to the striking development in the hygienic con- ditions of the factories, and says that very large sums
of money
have been expended by "canners in rebuilding factories and in making them thoroughly suitable for the preparation of a food pro- duct.

The parts which have to be added to an ordinary engine to convert it to this system are a rotary valve which admits the gas under pres- sure to all cylinders at the correct time, a chain drive, for the rotary valve from an extension of the fan or dynamo shaft, and gas storage bottles with stop valve, reducing valve, and two pressure gauges. It is claimed that the system gives high brake thermal efficiency, low running costs, rapid acceleration, and a high starting torque.
Hydrogen gives complete com- bustion, and no carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide comes out of the exhaust, which emits only clean air or nitrogen and a small per- centage" of water vapour. The absence of carbon also. reduces maintenance costs.
