Crisis In North China
(Continued from Page-1.)
JAPANESE ULTIMATUM NEXT STEP.
THE CHINESE HAVE HITHERTO NOT ACCEPTED THE JAPANESE DEMAND FOR THE WITH- DRAWAL OF CHINESE MILITLAMEN AND DEMOLITION OF THE CITY'S DEFENCE WORKS. THE NEXT STEP IS EXPECTED TO BE A JAPANESE ULTIMATUM, TRAFFIC ON THE SHANGHAI- NANKING BAILWAY IS DISORGANISED BY HEAVY CHINESE TROOP MOVEMENTS TO SHANG- HAI, IT IS REPORTED, THE CHINESE · ARE BUSILY DIGGING "TRENCHES AND ERECTING BARBED WIRE BARRAGADES ALL ROUND SHANGHAI WHILE THE EXODUS FROM POTENTIAL DANGER ZONES, IS MORE FEVERISH THAN EVER.
SECRECY IMPENETRABLE
Japanese secrecy is impenetrable but reports persist that troop-laden transports are on their way to Shanghal. Latest developments suggest the possibility of a real showdown being staged in Shang- hai instead of in North China with peace terms in event of a Japanese victory including all Sino-, Japanese issues. It is pointed out the fighting at Nankow was local, and, there was no sign of it. developing into a major test of strength. Air services with Shanghai are suspended and all planes belonging to the C.N.A.C. and Eurasia Corporation have been flown out of Shanghal to destinations, not disclosed. At present there are twenty-one Japanese warships inside the harbour-Reuter,

An increase of cabarets
was given, at the outset might look rasy to many taxidancers and might at- tract many decent and respectable girls to take to the profession, but the consequence, thereof would be disastrous, for it would not be long before the price of coupons would have to be reduced and thus attractive commission or salary of these taxidancers would be greatly reduced.

It could also be safely predicted that the time would sox come when some cabarets would have to be closed down and many hos- tesses turned ont.
A particularly attractive musical programme was presented by E. O'Neil Show. He played all the accompaniments for a quartette of singers who sang some very bright and refreshing numbers by Edward German, and Sullivan Evà Turn- er "(soprano) Helén Lockhart (con- tralto) Gaston D'Aquino (tenor) and Victor Sanders" (baritone) gave a very finished performance, the ensemble being really excellent and all th voices blended melod!, ously.
