Opening the case for the Crown,' Mr. Sheldon said that first de- tendant, Li Fuk-chong, prior to his arrest was manager of the Sincere Perfumery which was a subsidiary of the Sincere Company. Previous to this post, he was manager of the Sincers Life In- Aurance Co. Ko Wah-tak once worked under Lf in the capacity

of a clerk.

Approximately six weeks before the murder of Mr. David Chan Bze, on May 13, Ko had a conversation with L at the office, in the course or which i asked him if he was employed and whether he knew the deceased. Ko replied in the negative. Before leaving Li asked Ko to call again at his office tell- ing him that there was a big op portunity awaiting hlin.

Li and Ko left the office together and went home, where Li again pressed Ko to comply with his wish, but Ko repeated that he had no grudge against Chan. Li sug- gested that Ko should meet him at a bus stopping place about 5.15 p.m. so as not to, arouse any aus- picion. Before leaving he gave Ko $5 and a pair of grey flannels.

A few days later Kowalted at the bus terminus. He saw Li and the assistant manager, Mr. Wal Te-lee. Ko travelled on the bus and when they reached Tai Hang they both alighted and in- vited Ko to his house for dinner. After the meal Li asked Ko if he had acquired anybody to do "the job" to which Ko replied that it was difficult to get anyone who was willing. It was then arranged that their rendezvous would be in Prince's Cafe.

On the following day, as pres viously arranged, 'Ko met Ll in the cafe. Li promised to give Ko a sum of $300 if his request was carried out successfully.

Some days later Ko telephoned to Li and then met him at the bus stop. They went to Li's house again. was angry with Ko say- ing that nothing had yet been done for the money he spent. handed a sum of $170 in advance as part payment of $300. The ba- Lance was to be paid on the completion of "the job."

He was bleeding profusely Police were summoned and Mr. Chan was conveyed to the Kawicon Hospital where he died at 4 am

It was stated by Mr. Sheldon that a woman witnessed the crime. but she was unable to identity the person who did the stabbing.

Wong After the "crime. Ko, and Au returned to the taxi driv- ing towards the Jordan Road ferry. While nearing Bailey Shipyard. the knife was thrown away and was never found.

BLOOD STAINS .. They went to an opium divan in Hong Kong. Au observed that there was blood on his jacket and Ko called to the servant for water saying that he wanted to wash his face. The bloodstain was re- moved from the jacket. Before, to meet leaving they arranged again in Canton. Ko went to see L to report on "the job” and La was

pleased. He suggested Ko should go to Canton and promised that he would look after. Ko's family during his absence. It was also suggested that they should each" go under an assumed name in their correspondence.

On May 14, the day after the crime. Li gave Ko the remaining $130, being the balance of $300. He in turn met Au Hing and Wong at Boston Cafe and there gavė them $30 and $10, respectively.

In conclusion, Mr. Sheldon aạld that the taxi driver would be called to give evidence, but unfortunately he was unable to identify any of the three accused,
