Evening Clothes And Autumn Hats

Summer evening dresses of ging- ham and chints were worn at the Gardenia Gals held at the Four- gueux

Golf Club. Light colours predominated and there were many plain and printed piqué dresses with full skirts and fitted bodies. All these cotton frocks were trimmed with bright colours. A dress of white cotton organdie was incrusted with black Chan- tilly lace and with it went a sash of striped ribbon in vivid colours. Of dull black crêpe was a tightly draped dress with a low-cut bodice, over which WES Word a bolero of fine black lace,

Many autumin hats have two

colour schemes. The hats may be of felt. antelope, fur, or velvet Louise Bourbon's hats are bright in colours. She favours the Direc- toire lines which other milliners are following. A hat with a navy blue felt brim weeping up from the face had a red velvet crown crossed with narrow bands of white ermine. Toques for the afternoon are high and set back, Felt. toques are trimmed with masses of soft breast-feathers in mixed colours, completely hiding the felt ffonts of some.

The antelope berets from Le Monnier are fat and wide. The leather is tucked and pleated into soft and becoming lines. Taller shapes appears in the toques, which are made of felt, fur, and draped slik jersey, Twisted trimmings of velvet in bright colours relieve plain black hats. Narrow bind-

ings of colour edge the brims of unusual tricornes, Another nul liner who favours tall crowns is. Agnès,

THE HAIR

New Length

This summer has seen ha'r longer, so that many people pro- phesied a return to plaits and the burl In any case, semilong hair has adorned many heads, and these have been at their wits end to know how to contain their re- advantage that some portions of bellious locks. Short hair has the

it at least give no cause for anxiety. Semi-short hair has the faults of both long and short. I needs much more than the attention necessary for long hair and it has none of the tideness of short. The hair-net is demanded on all hands, and It provides tidiness, but It does not allow for any pretti- ness of hair.

Thus there is A reversion shorter hair again, since not everyone can take to hairpins and curlers without a pang New coiffures are slightly Japanese in design, and most people will adopt them only in a modified form. Hair 1s brushed forward "and curled in over the forehead-as though it were a fringe which is doubled under. " Partings are made on one alde. The more copious side has the hair brushed forward and curled under in the same way. The less copious side has the hair curled over Instead of under. A permanent wave ac- complishes all this safely. One more method makes a parting behind the car. brushes the hair forward, and curls It under, making a sort of frame to the face. More and more felt, less and less straw, is in evidence this summer. The modistes are show- ing a number of enormous hats. of black feit, some with briths gently, curving over the face. others with shallow crowns and wide straight brims turned up a little at the edge.

Black is still the colour, relieved with gay ribbons favourite

Erik especially likes ribbon trim-. mings. Nearly all the hats he's making now (and some of them. will be for early autumn as well as summer) boast bright-coloured petersham ribbon pipings, run- ning along folds in the crown, on top, at the sides, almost anywhere, Often these bindings take up the colour or the feather decoration.

HAIR RIBBONS AGAIN! Ribbons are having a spell of popularity for wear in the hair, as well as for hat trimming. Girls who have a horseshoe roll coiffure are adopting the pretty idea of a ribbon tied across the back of the head, as if connecting the two ends of the "borscahoe." It is attached to a narrow elastic which passes under the roll at the back.

Wearers of front-curled coiffures. have the bow tied on top of the head, just behind their curis. PAINTED DESIGNS There are few things it seeins, that can't be painted. All the newest summer accessories hand- bags, gloves, belts, scarves, powder cases are decorated with cunning little "motifs painted in the gayest "of hues. There are bunches of flowers, groups of little figures, or famous Paris buildings, on account of the Exhibition.

The days of curling-pins and sausage roll cuzlu "are" "over," out there is a great deal one can do to encourage babies' and small children's hair to grow pretuly and look glossy.

A new-born baby's hair should not be washed every day, ́al- though many nurses recommend it. This dries up the hair too much, making it brittle, and vy removing the natural oils at the roots sometimes leads to a scurty scalp.
