The War In Spain
(Continued from Page 1)
י.
With all this the machine-gun rests supreme' in defence. What a chance China lias in her troubles and we wonder if it will be the machine gun, well used, that will come to her assistance.
Paradoxically the strongest Peace force standing in Europe to-day is the German General Staff. While Dictator Mussolini; still believing | that modern weapons favour the aggressor, refuses to accept the les-
зоп
of the Spanish" war," "Nazi❘ Werner von Blomberg will coun- tenance no aggressive plans, and is at present recasting the whole post-war strategy of the German Army.
"
Mechanisation of the Nazi army was due for completion this year, after which it was reckoned that the third Reich, Its rear protected by the occupation of the Rhine- land, could with impunity attack Czechoslovakia. Using mechanised forces over short unmenaced "com- munication lines, it was hoped that intensive aerial bombardment would cause the war to last, but a few weeks before the Czechs.| Isolated, from their French and Russian allies, could receive out- side ald, and after that prepare to the seizure of that wonderful granary, the Ukraine.

BURNED AT STAKE
Rejected Suitor's Revenge On Lovely Lady Glamis
Four hundred years ago this year Lady Glamis, an ancestor of the Queen, was condemned to be burnt at the stake on. Castle Hill Edin burgh, on an accusation af witch- craft brought by a rejected suitor actuated by feelings of „ revenge. Lady Glamis was reputed to be the most celebrated beauty in Britain, in addition to which "her modesty was admirable, her judgment solid, and her courage higher than that. of most women."
On the day of the execution this beauty and courage so impressed the spectators who were confident of her innocence that they tried to rescue her, but were prevented by the King's officers and guard..
Tarred barrels and ofled faggots were piled around her, and she was burned to ashes within view of her husband and son, who beheld the terrible scene from David's Tower, which overlooked it.
The day after her death hër husband tried to
from escope Edinburgh Castle by means of a rape ladder let down over the. walls. But, this proving either to be too short or else breaking, be fell on the rocks and was dashed to pieces.
AIR PATROLS
(Continued from Page 2)
PXAMINED ON RACK Responsible for this tragedy. was William Lyon, a relative of the who had unsuccessfully family. offered his hand to Lady Glamis. Kis feelings turned to hate, and he alleged against Lady · Cilamis that she had tried to encompass the death of James V. with her husband, her son, and others "In making away with the King by witchcraft, to wit, by giving him charmed drinks or drugs."
Examined on the rack she and the others were regarded as con- demned by their own lips, although the Judges made an ineffectual appeal for the King's pardon for Lady Glainis.
Her two sons were sentenced to death with her, but were respited. and kept prisoners In Edinburgh Castle until the death of the King five years later. i
Later the informer, Wililam Lyon, is said to have been stricken with remorse and confessed his respon- ability, and he was banished from the kingdom."
The burning of criminals can- victed of witchcraft. sorcery, and murder, was a common form of punishment in the middle period of British history and persisted down to the end of the eighteenth century.
