FAROUK PROCLAIMED
KING OF EGYPT
Salute Of 101 Guns
Cairo, July 29.
Klar Farook was proclaimed King of Egypt this morning in Parliament House to where he drove from the Palace through streets thickly lined with masses of people who enthusiastically demonstrated their loyalty, In the Royal box in Parliament House sat the Queen Mother and the two younger sisters of the King.
*
There was no coronation but when the young King took the oath the assembly shouted," long live King Farouk of Egypt.". This proclamation was repeated three times after which a salute of 101 guns was fired.
The Royal party drove back to the palace escorted by Egypt- lan troops.-Reuter's Bulletin Service.
Egypt, as the senior Arab coun- try, and one which has just gained Its full independence, is anxious to celebrate a lasting and far- reaching impression in the Moslem world and elsewhere.
In olden times the Caliphs of Arabia were proclaimed King to the market places and at great fairs where the Caliph, seated in a huge tent, would solemnly promise before a gathering of the notables and chiefs of the land to defend Islam, obey the Koran and to work and, it necessary, fight for the welfare and glory of his people. The occasion was marked by in- terminable speeches expressing loyalty, acts of chivalry and dar- ing reats of horsemanship.
Moslem rulers and Kings follow- ed this tradition with varying de- gree until the Turkish conquest, when Egypt was ruled by Viceroya appointed by Turkey.
