Native Of Canary Island

Poland, land of women athletic champions, has produced a run- ner who is considered a likely America's rival to Jesse Owens, coloured triple Olympic champion

This young hope, also a man of colour, is named De Long and comes from the Canary Islands.

Although he had never previous. ly participated in a sports meet- ing of any kind. before he pro- vided a sensation when, during sports exercises, he covered "100 metres in 12 seconds.

Had he been running in normal circumstances, this time, only 1.3/5. seconde outside Owens' world re- cord, would have been considered great in itself, but the fact that De Long actually achieved. tuls feat. In heavy Army boots was re- markable.

Mr. and

Mrs. C. Reich York are on their way back after doing the round trip.

One of the first people to go ashore was Dr. Smalley who went down to Mandila in response to an call. Dr. Sanders emergency (Medical Oncer of the Empress of Russia) was taken ill and had to go to hospital, and Dr. Smalley very kindly stepped into the breach at almost

a moment's notice, taking over his duties on the trip to Maitila and back."

He reports an excellent bill of bealth throughout the short voyage and glorious weather, and said that he had much enjoyed a tery pleasant twenty-four hours with friends in Manila..

Mrs. Smalley and his daughter Joan met the ship on arrival, and

found Dr. Smalley very well and cheery after his brief holiday at sea
