CHINA DEFIES JAPAN'S

WARNING

Nanking Troops March Into

Hopei

Pelping, July 17.

Threafs of war loomed larger in North China to-day as Nan- .king troops matched across the Hopel, Province border in de

'fiance of the warning of Japan not to interfere in this area.

An unspected number of divisions has reached Paotingfu which is only 100 miles south-west of Tientsin, according to word received from a reliable foreign source.

However, it is understood that the Chinese have been in- structed not, to proceed further north than Paofingfu at present. Meanwhile, an authoritative despatch from Tientsin states that preparations are being made at Tongshan, about' half-way between Tientsin and Shanhalkwan, for the reception of a 'Ja- panese army corps which ordinarily does garrison duty in Kores, These troops are expected to arrive at their concentration point today

JAPANESE DEMANDS

Peping, July 17. The newest version of the Ja- panese demands current in Chi- nese circles There is that Tokyo requires the fusion of the northern part of Hopel and the whole of Charhar with the East Hopel state, 15 an independent union, with Tientsin, as its capital,

It is believed the Japanese want Tangku, close to Tientsin, a naval base, and that this is their second demand.

The third demand is thought to be the demilitarisation of the Fel- ping area by China, with Japanese troops to garrison the elty of Pel- ping in order to protect Japanese Interests.

Finally, it is proposed. Chinese believe, that the new Hopel-Char-

har state should defray the cost of the present Japanese mobilisa- tlon.

In view of the present negotia tions at Tientsin confrmation is not obtainable, but the suspected demands follow closely the nes of Major-General Dolhara's abor tive plan of 1935- Reuter...

Lord Plymouth particularly em- phasised the interdependence of the withdrawal of foreign volun- teers from Spain and the granting of belligerent rights. He said the. object of the latter was to seek. the best means of avoiding in- cidenta to warships in Spanish waters.
