Hirota On The Soviet Executions

Stating his views at a recent Cabinet meeting, on the political causes of the execution, of Marshal Tukhachevsky and seven other Generals, Mr. Hirota, the Foreign Minister, said that the steady growth in the Red Army of the influence of these vincers, who had all served under the Tsarist regime before they joined the 1917 Re- volution, gradually came to be regarded by Stalin as a serious ob- atacle to the consolidation of bls Administration, the "Miyako" re- ports. Again, during the past twenty years., in which these executed affeers did much to build the present Red Army, many young of- ficers trained by revolutionary military organs of various kinds have gradually gained much influence in the Army, resulting in rivalry for dominance between the old and new leaders. In such circum“ stances, the group of the executed officers. developed anti-Stalin tendencies by degrees. The latest purge testines. in a sense, to one of the organic weaknesses of the Red Army.

Regarding the report from Moscow of an attempt by a Red of- ficer on Stalin's Bie, the Foreign Minister said that his Department had not received any confirmatory information.

Military Academy Applicants

The military authorities have nxed the number of applicants: to be admitted into the military academies on December 1st at 2,200 -the highest in the history of the Japanese Army. They originally Axed the number at about 1,000 and published the fact in the "OM~- cial Gazzette" on May 17th, announding April lat next as the date o of admission. As a result of maturer study of the trends of the international situation, however, they have come to the conclusion that this number is inadequate and consequently have decided to increase it. at abound. to 2,200 at the same time altering the date of admission to December 1st this year. Under the original plan, the age qualifications for applicants were men from 18 to 20, but under the new plan; the maximum age was altered to 22':

If to this new number is added the number of applicants to be admitted into the military preparatory schools and the paymasters" schools, the total of prospective military cadets will be 2,700. Before the Manchurian affair, the number was between 500 and 800.

Japan's "Mata Hari”

Alleged to have been acting as agent for a certain foreign war attaché in Tokyo, a 20-year-old girl, Yoko Yanai (ssumed name); is being examined by the Kure Gendarmerie Corps.hook tyr

"Japan's Mata Hari" as the Japanese press calls her, was often seen loitering on the bluff of Kure, which commands a full view of the Kure Naval Station and the Etajima Naval Academy, in the lat

Questioned, Yanal pleaded, that she was a mere tourist, having come to the city on May 24th. She had a number of picture post- cards of Kure and Etajima, but she explained that she had bought them as souvenirs.

While detaining her, the authorities sent an inquiry to her native place in Fukuoka, and learned that her parents had a fruft garden, allegedly "subsidized" by a foreigner! Pr

On the night of June 17th, Miss Yanat is said to have confessed that she had been requested by an attaché in Tokyo for a certain country to investigate conditions both on land and sea in the forti- fled zone of Kure.

It is stated that the girl, after quitting her school in Fukuoka in 1934. went, to Tokyo, where she became a taxi dancer Later she made friends with many foreigners, it is said, 'and to-day is acquaint-. ed, with many foreign residents in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki, She is further stated to be engaged to a foreigner in Yokohama.
