SIGNS OF THE TIMES
(Continued from Page 1)
Also was there the saying that no matter how troubled France might be about her balance-sheet, yet never had that trouble hurled her into financial chaos. She had, in a word, always pulled-through somehow. Often miraculously, but she had pulled-through.
Some idea of the solidness of her national financial position might, argued Mr. Steed, be gained from the basic fact that during the past few years she had been paying-off her, national debt at the rate of £80,000,000 annually. That was a practical form of patriotism, and that material patriotism coupled with the great driving-force of mental and moral patriotism make for a mighty power-a power that It would be advisable for any nation in the world to treat with there proper respect. Doubtless were those observers of inter- national affairs who would point out that there were great dissen- sions in the political ranks in the France of this July, but these dis- sensions were surely not as great as were those of the France of July. 1914. characterised as they were by murder and assassination...
From these observations Mr. Steed pointed the moral that any nation which contemplated gamb- ling on the uncertainties of domes- tic affairs in France would be well advised to consider well before taking action, and if that were done, then, concluded Mr. Steed, he felt that much of the large and small talk about haphazard inter- vention in the Spanish conflict would be considerably discounted. He had no fear for the peace of Europe so long as France remain ed traditionally moderate united in spirit.

The marked increase amount of air mail received at and
is sufficient to rank Hong Kong despatched from Kal Tak Airport as one of the biggest air mail ports in the world.

This rapid increase is due not only to the addition
the Burnsia Aviation Corporation Ser- vice but also to the full swing of the Pan-American Airways and the China National Aviation Cor- Whe-poration schedules.
Those most seriously affected are the factories weaving artificial silk cloth. The foreign yarn they are using at present costs 85 cents alb, whereas the nearest British equivalent costs $2.00 a lb. ther anything can be done to ligh- ten the blow to them, remains to Plants for the manufac- be seen.

In this connection a “Man- chester Guardian" report just re- ceived by air mail states that a the Manchester deputation from Chamber of Commerce waited upon the President of the Board of Trade in London recently to dis cuss the possibilities of expanding United Kingdom exports of cot ton and rayon piece-goods to over- sea markets.
There will be markets in which the United Kingdom goods will not be acceptable on account of their high price. Hong Kong would ns- turally like the opportunity of sup- plying them, if the "spun, woven, and finished" rule can be modified to make this possible.

The last meeting of the season was held at the Cathedral Hall yesterday afternoon, and the final tea party was characterised by delicious home-made cakes sup- piled by Mrs. AF. Smith. Gentlemen: As we all know, this is the first monthly meeting of our new committee of the 13th election for the years 1937 and 1938, and I feel very glad to have the honour to take up the chairmanship again. However, I am afraid that my knowledge and ablity are rather limited and had it not been for the kind support and ardent help of the previous committee, I would not have been able to do what has been done for the Chamber and I hope very much that I can acquire the same noble spirit of co-Chinese girl by name of Oy Chan. Meetings will be resumed on operation and the same valuable assistance from you, gentlemen of the first Tuesday in September, the committee, in order that some- thing greater still may be affected for the good of the business circle and something more profitable still may be achieved for this Chamber which, as we all know, the one and only one big organization of all our Chinese merchants at large, in this colony.

TREMENDOUS HELP Mr. J. M. Wong as vice-chair-
Tendering man, has been tremendous help in the Chamber's affairs, and I am awfully glad to see that Mr. Wong has been elect- ed vice-chairman again this time with the happy thought that I have not been deprived of the valuable assistance from so capable a man in all future undertakings. CURRENCY CHANGE According to the current news, there will be a change in the system of the Canton currency by raising the rate of exchange of the Canton paper money and I can forecast that this will mean every Advantage for the interport trade between Hong Kong and Canton and the revival of trade.
