MIDSUMMER PROMOTIONS
In the half-yearly promotions to be made on June 30, the upper iimit of the zone for promotion to commander has been raised by slx months. to include leutenant- commanders of 74 years' seniority. This is the first change in the zone since January, 1930, up to which time it included officers with be- tween 21 and 61 years' seniority. and was then raised to between three and seven years
The effect of the change now made will be that 22 lleutenant- cominanders with seniority between January and June, 1930, who would otherwise have passed out of the zone, will again be considered for selection. Since it has been decid- ed to raise the zone still further on December 31. 1937. to eight years' seniority, these officers will have yet another chance. Of the 22, 13 are specialists, and three others have qualified Inter- preters. All served during the latter part of the War as midship- men,

The June Navy List shows that there are 380 lieutenant-comman ders, in the new zone, that, 13, with between three and 74 years' seniority. The total six months ago, was 348. and a year ago 336. If the number of promotions made is the same as last time (28), the average will be about one among every 13 officers.
