ROYAL NAVY "

The new submarines Grampus, "Lieutenant - Commander `R W Moir, and Rorqual, Lieutenant- Commander D. V. Sprague, have left Portsmouth to join the 4th Flotilla. on the China - Station. These are the third and fourth vessels of the Porpoise type of mine-laying'. submarines, of which the nameship was completed in 1993 They are of about 1,500 tons, or slightly heavier than the Rainbow class of patrol sub-) marines, but in order to provide accommodation för mines and laying gear the number of torpedo tubes is reduced from eight to six, and the horse-power from 4,400 to 3,000, with a reduction in the de- signed speed.

The Grampus and Rorqual will call at Malta from June 19 to 24: Ismallia, June 28-July 1; Aden, July 6-10: Colombo, July 19-25; Penang, July 30-August 3: Singa pore, August 5-10; and are due at Hong Kong on August 16.

RESERVE FLEET COMMANDS

A number of changes are taking in the commands of ships in re- serve, Commander E. W. Anstice. hitherto Senior Fleet Air Arm Officer in HMS. Courageous, will assume command of the cruiser Carlisle at Devonport to-morrow on her reducing to reserve, from service on the Africa Station. Commander T. A G. Pakenham. late executive oficer of the Kent, flagship in China, takes command of the Calypso in reserve at Devon- port, in succession to Commander H. W. Pawsey, who joins the Colombo at this port as Commani- der (Destroyers), in succession to Commander T. G. Harrison, O.BE. Commander R. A. Startin, O.B.E., A.M., has 'been appointed to com- mand the battleship Queen Eliza beth on her reducing for large,re- pairs at Portsmouth."
