The Duke of York's Cup was won, almost inevitably, by the Royal Navy at Ranelagh recently. The Royal Air Force were beaten by 11 goals to 3. but, had the match been played on handicap it would have been a very close affair. At the end of the match the Duchess of Gloucester presented their cups to the winning team, writes a Home correspondent
The Navy have an aggregate handicap of 13, reckoning Lleut. Comdr. E C. B, W. Sim as ope, and the RAF, for whom the Duke of Gloucester played at No. 1, were certainly nowhere near double figures and were nearer 3 than 5. Nevertheless, though the Navy, had always much the better of it, with that very much improved player Lord Louis Mountbatten as their chief director and player, the RAF. did by no means badly, and Alr Vice-Marshal Baldwin put up a grand show. He has an eye like hawk and was "the Cook, and the Captain bold, and the mate of the Nancy' brig... ++
and very nearly everything else as well. He was here, there, and everywhere (like Old Man Kangaroo, "he had to") and the RAF, though beaten by a well-drilled and admirably mounted team, were by no means put to shame. But it would be pleasant to see more good polo in the RAF. A good horseman is al- most invariably a good pilot-at least they were in the high and far-off days--and the game pught to be encouraged in that Bervice.
The RAF. drew frst blood when Flight Lieut. R. L Bradford hi through, but immediately after. Comdr. Heywood-Lonsdale made a good opening for Lord Louis Mountbatten to score. Comdr. Lambe put the Navy ahead, and in the second chukka they scored three goals to their opponents".one. In this Lord Louis Mountbatten was playing Chico, a little rat of a pony to look at, but one, none the less, who has carried 17 st. in international polo. Chico formerly belonged to Mr. Hugh Nelson, whose sudden death has cast a gloom over the pole world. I did not know him well, but I hope that someone who did will do justice to this genuine, keen, and altogether charming personality. The Navy went on 5-1, but then the Navy's 'No. 3 came out too soon to a 40- yard penalty hit and a goal was given against his side. That was 6-2 and the Navy put on two more goals in the third chukka, through Commander Sim and Commander Heywood-Lonsdale. Nothing much happened in the fourth chukka. though I noticed with interest a

Early in the sixth chukka Air Vice-Marshal Baldwin from a hit in, put up a lovely pass under his pony's neck, which would have been a goal for the BAF. had any one been up to take it, but soon afterwards Flight Lieut. Bradford took the ball right up with a fine run, and reduced the lead. How ever, just before the end Comdr. Lambe, on that very fast pony Abelita, went up the ground like a flash and made the score 11-3.
