Mr. Ormsby-Gore, Secretary di State for the Colonies, and Lady Beatrice Ormsby-Gore were the guests of honcur at the annual dinner of the Association of British Malaya, at the Hotel Victoria, states the "Times.” Mr. J. G. Hay, president, was in the chair.
The King, in a telegraro, expres- sed his sincere thanks and that of the Queen for the loyal assurances and good wishes of members of the association.
In submitting the toast of "The Prosperity of British Malaya" the Chairman welcomed the presence of the Yang di-Pertuan Begar of Negri Sembilan and the Sultan of Pahang, and congratulated them as well as those who advised them on the tranquil and prosperous conditions existing in the States over which they ruled. In Mr. Choo Kia Peng, accompanied by his wife, and Mr. Tan Cheng Lock they had two worthy representa- tives of the Chinese Community in Malaya, Progress towards recovery in Malaya had undoubtedly been hastened greatly by the operations of the tin and rubber schemes. The problem that confronted all"
those who endeavoured to manage schemes of that kind, whether it were rubber, tin, or any other
commodity, was how by their acts to establish a price that gave satisfaction to the producer and did not at the came time antago- ize the consumer. In the opera- tion of the rubber scheme they had been greatly helped by in- creased consumption. The present schenie was now running its course, and the time was near when they must consider renewal.
