Average mail via America was anything from 400 to 700 bags.
RIGID TIME TABLE
The record amount received by this route was 1,300 bags carried by the. Tatsuta Maru, lú November last, which caused the Post Office staff to work overtime in order to keep up with their zealously rigid time-table for dis- tribution. Yet in spite of the quantity, the whole mail was de- livered to local addresses within the stipulated three hours.
The first principle followed by the Post Ozce is to distribute let- ter mail and if the amount.is ex- ceptional, newspapers are usually kept over to the afternoon (as- suming the mail is taken off a steamer "in the morning).
Quantities of mail exceeding the one thousand mark, were received from America on two or three oc- casions and were a direct result of the shipping strike in the United States, when American vessels were completely tied up and postal connections entirely disrupted.
