REAK-ADMIRALS RETIRED The four rear-admirals who have been retired on promotion to flag rank have been 37 years in the. Navy, having entered H.M.S. Bri- tannia as cadets in 1900. They all served as lieutenants and Heuten ant-commanders during the War and were promoted to commander In the first list after the Armistice. Rear-Admiral F. H. W. Goolden was until recently Flag-Captain in H.M.S. London, 1st Cruiser Squa~ dron, Mediterranean. He was in H.M.S. Iron Duke throughout the War, becoming her senior lleuten- ant-commander after she ceased "to be Admiral Jellicoe's flagship. During the world crutse of 1923-24 he was exercutive officer of H.M.S. Hood. As a captain he has been Chlef Staff Officer in the Austra- llan Navy and" Director of Opera- tions at the Admiralty.
