Death Of Professor J. L. Stocks
London, June 14. The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Professor J. L. Stocks, Vice-Chancellor of Iverpool Uni- versity, at the age of 54.
Before taking up his post at Liverpool last year, he was for 12 years professor of philosophy at Manchester University and earlier was lecturer at Oxford,
The newspapers recognise that his death robs the academic life of the country of one of its leading figures.

During the month prior to the explosion neither the engineer nor the fireman had mentioned any- thing about the boiler.
On the day in question the Rlo de Janeiro Maru was in port and the launch Dojima Maru carried passengers to and from the pier every hour. The launch « arrived back at Queen's Statue Pler from the liner at 7.20 p.m.

Witness ren- dered what aid he could to the "Injured and in the meantime an ambulance arrived. One of the H.K. Club boys informed witness that there was a body on the roof of the Club.
The bodies, said witness, seemed to be more charred than scalded. He saw no scalds Witness did not actually see the explosion.

Unification Plan”
In Australia
In an effort to obtain a unified aviation policy for the entire con- tinent of Australia, èfforts are be ing made to organize a conference, representing the Governments of the six States and to persuade them to delegate their air powers to the Commonwealth, or to work for the unification of their legis lation.
Witness identified the deceased Fat the public mortuary.
The safety valve of the boiler, stated withess, usually lifted at 123 lbs. per square inch."
THE COOK'S STORY Sin Kan, cook, who was also aboard the Dojima 'Maru, described the explosion and said that he was on the starboard side of the stern just after he had prepared boiling tea. Witness heard a noise and when he came to he was in the water. When witness got on to the pler ne saw people about. His eyes "were sore and he closed them. His
thigh was scalded. Witness" was taken to hospital where he under- went treatment for two days.
His Worship: Did you notice any leakage of the pressure guage on the boiler?--I never looked at pressure guage.' "Before the explosion did you no- tice if the launch was making any noise?—No.
"Public opinion for some time in Australia has been deinanding many reforma in aviation, includ- ing the installation of beams, radio equipment for, pamenger planes and 'additional. beacons.

OBJECTS IN THE AIR V Chief Petty Officer D. E. Clay- ton, R.N.,, of HM Submarine Olympus, who was walking near the Star Ferry wharf at the time when he heard a loud blast, told the Court that he saw several pb- Jects in the air. Assisted by an American seaman who was at Queen's Statue Pier, witness help- ed some people who were strug- gling in the water on to the whart. Witness was the second person on the scene. There was no particu- lar noise just before the explosion occurred.
The last witness for the day, Mr. 'D. K. Mackie, of the Eastern Ex- | tension Telegraph Company, gave evidence that on the night in ques- tion he was on duty in the build- ing and shortly before 8 p.m. there. .was a particularly loud explosion. It was a single report followed, witness thought, by another very minor explosion. He went to the office verandah and noticed, frag- ments in the air. Witness then proceeded to the ground floor and went over to where a body was lying immediately outside the main en- trance. Witness gave instructions to his service clerk to telephone for the police and ambulance.
Witness hurried to the pler where he found several bodies. Three of them were alive. He saw a foreigner ori the steps gesticulat- ing wildly and pointing to a pez- son in the water hanging on to girders on the north-end of the Jetty.
