Enthusiasm Displayed
In Races Yesterday
The Dragon Boat Festival, one of the most interesting "of Chinese festivals, which falls on the fifth day of the Bfth moon (lunar calendar), was again celebrated yesterday by the local Chinese community. In traditional style.
الي
Despite the decrees of the Nanking Nationalist Government and other efforts to stamp out what the' reformers in China term "old superstition", the Chinese in Canton and all other pro- vinces of China" celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival with great- en enthusiasm than in previous years.
No doubt. this patriotic fervour of the people has been intensified
peaceful by the
unification of China, the courageous defence of the North East and North West. territories against foreign invas slon, and the "New Spirit of Na- tionalism", which has been ristill ed in the minds of the people and which pervades the whole country,
All the native banks and leading stores and public schools were closed for the day, while the "usual dragon boat races were held in
nearly every river of the Canton deita districts.
In Hong Kong some exciting. races were witnessed by large and enthusiast crowds of spectators at Aberdeen, North Point, West Point and the New Territories, where a number of gaily beflagged dragon boats participated.
Apart from the prizes and hap- ners for the winners of the races, great interest was taken in them. by the spectators on account of the "side bets".
