TO GRADUATE NURSES

Yesterday afternoon was, a memorable day in the annals of the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital (Training School for Nurses and Midwives) when the record number of 16 graduates received their certificates from Mrs. North, the wife of the Hon. Mt. R. A. C. North (Coloniál Secretary) in the presence of a large gathering on the roof garden of the Sanatorium. Also, it was the first occasion in which the Institution has had graduates in midwifery.

In the course of his speech, the Hon. Dr. Li Shu-fan, Chair- man of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital. expressed thanks to the doctor for their untiring interest in conducting lectures, and paid warm tribute to the Matron, Miss Noreen Lum, who was largely responsible for mak- Ing the Training School what it was to-day by her wonderful in- spiration, ne example and self devotion.

In his speech, the Hoti. Dr. Shu- fan said:-

We are highly honoured to have. the presence of the Hon. and Mrs. R. A. C. North. One of Mrs. North's

educational work in the Colony. and above all, she la a great friend of the Chinese people."

At this function "to-day we have a record number of 16 graduates. one of whom graduates in nursing alane, eight graduate in midwifery alone (the latter having received their certificates in nursing pre- viously) and seven are taking their certificates both" in nursing, and midwifery.

Gruesome details of a murder in Shanghai Street, on May 17, when Tong Shun-wing, aged 26, was alleged to have killed his clansman, Tong Shu-lam, aged 27, were re- vealed at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday when Tong appeared-be- fore" Mr. E. Himsworth on the capital charge.

The prosecution was conducted by Mr. E H. Williams, Assistant Attorney Generai, asalsted by Sub- Inspector Cunninghain.
