An encouraging feature of the returns is the further Improve- ment shown by exports of manu- factured articles, which rose by £7,349,000, all classes of goods contributing to the expansion. Iron and steel exports rose by £1,201,000 and cotton exports by £1 252 000. The larger demands of British industry are reflected in an increase of £5,936,000 inim- ports of raw materials.
Imports for the Arst four months of the present" year amount to £312 002,000 and ex- ceed the corresponding figure for 1936 by £45,185,000 (17 per cent.). Exports are £24,683,000 (18 "per cent.) larger at £164148,000, and re-exports have risen by £4 249.000 to" £28,030,000. (19 per cent.) Thus the total visible adverse balance for the period is £121,826 000,
