The shantung skirts at Lelong's are dared, not pleated, and the jackets to go with them are simply tailored. The new blouses are worn outside the skirts and they are cut into two points in front like waistcoats. A blouse of navy- blue lawn is right with a costume of powder-blue piqué, and brightly printed silk blouse goed with a shantung ensemble in gla gerbrown. Afternoon ensembles

are made in printed shantung. Patou uses natural shantung for all hours of the day. Handknitted linen bands edge trim Inen →jackets in the collection which
Chanel is showing. These jackets. are worn with plain skirts and blouses of the same colours 3 those of the costumes. Contrast- Log colours are also right for blouses, and a pink organdle blouse. may go with a navy-linèn tallor- made.
Jackets and skirts аге tailored in blue and white printed lawn. Paquin uses doubled lawn for such ensembles and binds the edges with plain blue.
SIMPLE SILK FROCKS

sur frocks ..are very simple. They have high necklines and short sleeves, Shorter skirts are now in fashion and waistlines are well marked with belts of the same Skirts are slightly fuller, for the afternoon than they for the mor- !ning.
Many are flared and some have their fulness smocked into the watst.
Mainbocher has designed sim
summer dresses for the holiday season. These are usually figured with big dealgna. Loose jackets of printed silk are put with plala dresses. The same silk as that. used for the jackets should trim the necklines of these dresses.
UZON BRILLIANTINE Long white coats are of linen,

shantung, and silk piqué. They may also be spotted with dark colours to match the dresses which go with them. All coats at closely to the waistline. Open tunic-coats are usually belted or they have fastenings in the front of the waist,
Very light materials are for afternoon ensembles. Organza and net are tallored for warm days. Patou has a jacket and dress of double black net. The net for this dress is worked in dat tucks of different widths and the en- semble has a black silk foundation. Embroidered muslin, dyed to dark colours, is correct for afternoon costumes and for dresses. Navy- blue, cinnamon-brown, and black embroidered muslin will be worn this summer. It is usual to 'trim ních dresses with plain muslin borders of the same colours as those of the 'dresses.
Summer clothes are bright in colour for informal occasions, but for the afternoon black and navy- blue are the · most-fashionable` colours. Pale blue and pink are more usual trimmings for these dresses than is white. A black dinner dress may have a softly rolled neckline lined with pale blue satin, and two clips, one of blue and the second in pale pink, to hold it in parition, Plain whitė - is correct for sumtner” evenings. There are many coloured evening dresses, and figured materials are specially vivid in colour.

Silken Tulle Capes
A - coped evening" wrap of silken tulle, gathered at neck- line and with wide rainbow stripes running down to ground length is a distinguish- ed evening 'model. The idea iɛ brilliant over slender white gowns. Transparent capes of * this type vie with plain colour- ed overcoats of redingole style for suminer evenings. One example in organza in a tone of reddish-purple orchid ir placed over
a fight orchid mauve gown of the fabric, the décollete and waistline lined in ribbon velvet in the darker tone, -

Wavy blue organza emphasises the single coloured theme, ex cept for oblong matt sequina ranging in shades of blue from royal to sky. Joined together these blues make series of wide banda commencing a short distance from the finished hem- line with the sequins giving a special swing to the redingote.

MAYO'S
"A lot of pretty hats have just been unpacked and may be seen in Mayo's window in the Gloucester Arcade. There are styles to suit every type, and some of the new shapes are most becoming.

PARIS FASHION SNAPSHOTS
Shades of rich violet are beling worn in the evening by leaders of fashion, This colour is not sumcient alone the season's craze for contrast must be complied with 80
Ne see it combined with blue or pastel-tinted mayve.
For example, a pale chiffon gown was worn under a full-length violet grosgrain coat. A subtle touch was the wreath of sweet peas in the hair. More formal was a frock and bolero jacket in shaded. violet bugles. The bolero sleeves being but three-quarter length, deep purple gloves were added.
Black lace is favoured particularly with a heavy white material such as grosgrain or silpper satin. Full skirts are made with alter- nating bands of fabric and lace, and simple corsages are half con- cealed under little transparent bolero jackets. These face coatees are going to enjoy a tremendous" vogue.
Complete lace overskirts are seen, very voluminous and invariably open in front to reveal a contrasting petticoat. Sometimes the lace
carried up in a bib effect to the chin. One such model was finish ed with an emereld velvet "dog-collar.""
White remains popular, particularly white satin. So does goid, especially for full-length, edge-to-edge evening coats These are usually collarless, shaped at the waist and unlined. Similar costs in chiffon will be worn as the season advances. The short jacket is a back number, unless it be a bolero forming part of an ensemble,

The Paris Hats
Hats poll.
revolve "round the The hat that does this most conspicuously I a sort of Juliet cap, and upon this theme there are endless vària- tions. Another principle discover- able among hats is that of taking some object and exaggerating it out of all knowledge. An example ' of this is the sailor cap, of which the band has to remain "moré or less intact, but the crown of which Is blown up until it stands out and away from the head. Finally, set- ting back or to the ide is also exaggerated, until another feature has to come to the rescue to keep the hat on at all
The Reboux hat is one of the many toques and is made of rings. of four different coloured ribbons. The calot, or Juliet cap. Is the basis of many treatments. Most Poften perhaps it has some front appendage, 4 bunch of flowers which looks perched on the fore- head, an extra piece of felt or straw, a vell with a marked edge. bunched up in front so that it looks blown there. The vell plays many parts here;. It may merely cover the eyes or it may even trail over the shoulders. Besides the well, the calot may have a con- spicous edge. The edge is always important, since from there the hair springs, and the calot has to look as though it were holding down the springy hair.
CLIPS
"A few years ago the only clips we know about were kept in our desk drawer to be used for holding papers together. Ever since fancy clips were placed on the market, however, we have been able to get smart little clasps in countless diffe- rent forms. For example, there are clips of paste, glass, silver, gold and many other materiais. Even ear-zintgs are now made as clips, both a practical and smart idea

Bathing Season Commences
Most people who bathe regularly get a brown skin which advertises the fact the they are living a heal thy open air ilfe. Nevertheless hot days seem to have a relaxing effect upon the face. The beats. opens the pores of the skin, and beads of unbecoming perspiration appear.
This is one of nature's methods of ridding the system of impuri ties, and tends to beautify the akin. But it leads to relaxed and enlarged pores, unless suitable means are taken to contract therm when the process is over, since the atmosphere is ridt cool enough now to do this.
The skin needs help, and should be toned up by an astringent lotion. Most skin tonics contain as tincture of astringents such benzoin. This combined with eau- de Cologne, and slightly diluted with rose-water is a remedy easily obtainable and most effective, but rather expensive owing to the price of tincture and scent.
|^|| Old-Fashioned Lotion" Here is an old-fashioned lotion, given from a private source. Place in a wide-mouthed far about twenty leaves of bay. On this pour loz of plain alcohol. Let It stand a week, shaking occasionally, it must be tightly corked so that the spirit does not evaporate
The reason that this moder ornament has become so popular is that it is so useful. You can put a clip in the band of your hat and it helps to give the hat that becoming Httle pull down over one eye. You can also use one, like the gleaming body of a butter fy, in the centre of a modigh neck bow. Besides, clipe can be worn at the edge of a decollete back, ones the skin and acts
