FIRST AIR MAIL CORONATION PICTURES

CROWNING OF KING GEORGE VI

The "impressive scene as the Archbishop of Canterbury placed the Crown of St. Edward on the head of King George VI. As soon as this was done there were loud, cries of "God Save The King," and outside salutes were fired in the King's honour. Our picture shows the King seated in the Coronation Chair, having received the Orb, the Ring, and the Sceptres, while the Archbishop of Can- Behind the terbury, in his magnificent cope, stands with the Crown held aloft over the King. Archbishop is the Dean of Westminster bearing the Bible, which was afterwards presented to the King. On the right of the throne is the Bishop of Bath and Wells and on the left the Marquess of Zetland, who carried the Sword of State. "Some of the Queen's train bearers are on the left of the picture...

ROYAL FAMILY IN HAPPY

BALCONY SCENE

A happy picture of Their Majesties on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on their return from the Abbey. They had to acknowledge again and again the cheers of a vast crowd outside the Enlace gates. In the front are Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. Behind the King is Earl Kitchener, one of the nine Pages who bore his train at the Coronation, and beside the Queen is lady Urania Manners, daughter of the Duke of Rutland and one of her Majesty's six train-bearers. The King is wearing the Imperial State Crown, which is of silver and weighs only 39 ounces, as compared with the saven pounds of the golden Crown of England, used for the crowning ceremony but not worn on the Journey from the Abbey on account of its weight. As the Imperial State Crown is the crown not of a Kingdom, but of an Empire, its arches are not depressed at the centre, as are those of the golden crown. The Queen is weating her Coronation crown.“
