Gone are the lofty side oll bunkers and water tanks which are a distinguishing feature of the preceding ship. In the new vessel these compartments "are at a much lower level, thus lowering the centre of gravity and conducing to greater stability.

Sir Alan Anderson, M.P., propós-clares.

Many of the water compart- ments are so arranged that they will serve as anti-rolling tanks. Steadiness is further assured by the fitting of broad bilge keels.

SPECIAL PROPELLERS Little change has been made in the shape of the bows, but the midship section and the stern will bear small resemblance to those of the Queen Mary. The curvature of the stern conforms to the action. of the four propellers which have been specially designed for the ship, to give maximum thrust with minimum vibration.

Thanks to the weight-saving methods adopted, the displace- ment, or total waterborne weight of the new ship will be less than the Queen Mary's. On the other hand, her gross tonnage is not- cially estimated. at 86,000 tons. which would make her about 5,000 tons larger than the Queen Mary and 2,600 tons larger than the Normandie.

KEEPING, THE SHIP DRIER The deck plan of No. 552 will be quite unlike that of her pre- decessor. It has been found that when a ship which, like the Queen Mary, is Atted with a top-gallant forecastle, drives at top speed into a head sea, she takes a good deal of water and spray over the bows.

On the other hand, model expert. ments show that an unbroken fore- castle deck, provided it is sum- ciently high above the water, keeps the ship drler. Consequently the new liner will have a Hush but well-sheared foredeck, traversed by a massive steel V-shaped break- water.

As the whole ship will be more buoyant than the Queen Mary, she is expected to ride the seas more easily, and also to develop mbre speed for a given output of ma- chinery power,

Although the Queen Mary has proved an unqualified success, sur- passing all expectations of her builders and owners, it has beeh determined that her newer con- sort shall be the unchallenged and unassailable queen of the ocean.

CHINA'S SYSTEM OF RAILWAYS

. China has a five-year plan for doubling her railways. That means that five thousand miles of new railway has to be built at the rate of a thousand miles a year.

Under the Nationalist Govern- ment the railway situation has im- proved, since 1933 a definite ad- vance has taken place.

Dominions, having 3,000 miles of border to one of the wealthiest and greatest countries of the world the United States. Canada took from the United Kingdom goods to the value of £25,000,000 sterling and exported to the United King- dom £18,000,000 worth. Al Canadians realized that the Mo- ther Country was not only kind but generals.

Just as in the political sphere the British Commonwealth of Na- tions had led the way in democratic institutions, "so in the "sphere of commerce, business and trade it might have the further mission of proving how different countries, by approaching the problems in a spirit of good will, could solve them to the advantage of all. To a world sorely stricken in many parts with violence, hatred, and strife, there could go forth from the Imperial Conferences a mess- age of peace.

"Sir Archdale Parkhill. Australian Minister for Defence, proposed the health of the chaimman, and said that the Australian Commonwealth had to thank Lord Hirst for a re- port on its economie position which was of the utmost value.

Lord Hirst, in reply. said that to balance divergent problems was the British-aim, and with the help of the representatives from the Dominions and Colonies who had come to London, he felt that we would solve those problems, if not to the extent of 100 per cent., yet with such efficiency as would be very useful to the countries as a whole.
