The ceremony followed a flight over the Pole by plane, which was piloted by M. Vodopyanor. It was only the fourth occasion in history that such a feat had been accom- plished
In their moment of triumph, communication between the plane and the radio station on Prime Rudolf Island broke down. It was restored later when the scientists erected a station on the floe, and news of the fight was Bashed to the world.

The pilot, who has been given the title of "hero of the Soviet Union" took 6 heurs 10 minutes to reach the Pole from Prince Rudolf Island, the expedition's base.

RADIO ANNOUNCEMENT
Moscow, May 22
The Soviet air expedition, head ed by bearded Professor Ottà Sch midt, has successfully down over the North Pole.
Brie radio messages from the famous academician announce that the expedition, after circling the Pole, landed safely on an ice foe 20 kilometres away. slightly west of the Rudolf Island meridian
No other aeroplane has ever landed so close to the top of the world.
A base has been set up alongside the skl-fitted monoplanes which took the party of over a hundred on the expedition. and Professor schmidt will travel afoot to the Pole, where he will plant the Soviet Hammer and Sickle fag.- Reuter.
THE LEADER
The leader of the expedition is one of the bravest men alive to- day. His life is one long story ol heroic struggles against nature # the Arctic.
He commanded the Soviet ship Chelyuskin, which was sunk in the iceffoes in the Behring Sea in Fe bruary, 1934.
For two months Professor Ben- midt and his 103 companions Uved on the ice in tents. He had rescued the wireless gear from the ship, and the messages he sent out when there appeared no hope that he or any of his party would ever see civilisation again are among the heroic classics like those Scott lefl behind him.
When the Bolsheviks "came into power ir Russia, Professor Sch- midt joined them as a Commun 1st, but took little part in politics.
On March 5, 1934, an aeroplane reached the foe and took of the 10 women and two children in the party. While the others werd Professor. Schmidt's awaiting rescue.the floe on which landing at the Pole, ten tons of
