LIFE MEMBERSHIP
By accepting the invitation of the Couricll of the Hong Kong Ride Association to become an Honorary Life member of the Association, the number one Soldier of the Empire." Field-Marshal Sir Cyru John Deverell, G.C.B., K.B.E con- ferred a
great honour on this vigorous local organisation,
INTERESTING CHARACTER
SKETCH
A senior officer, now on the Retired List and resident in the Colony, gave the following interest- ing character sketch of the Fleid- marshal yesterday:-"I arst met Cyril Deverell in 1904 when he was adjutant of the West Yorks in Quetta, He was a hard-working regimental officer of the calm and purposeful type." He married Miss Grant. Dalton, who was the daugh- ter of the Colonel of that regiment. "It is interesting to note that this regiment produced many good soldiers, including General Sir Wal- ter Kitchener.
"A FIRST CLASS GENERAL" "The present Chier of the Im- perial General Staff passed through the Staff College and, after various appointments, Field-Marshal De- verell was given the command of the Third Division in France-and that was where he made his name. "In the retreat of March, 1918, the Third Division under Deverel and the Fifty-first Scottish Division under General ("Uncle") Harper, withstood the whole of the burnt of the attack on the Fifth Army.”
Epitomising the character of the soldier and the man, this retired officer who knew him so well de- clared. "Deverell is one of those re- gimental officers (so rare these days!) who completely fulfils the duties of the first class general. He has luck and understands the *war of movement' for which the French show so much admiration."
