Coronation celebrations yesterday were marred by a serious traffic mishap, 'Involving two well-known local sportsmen, which occurred in the vicinity of Homuntan, Kowloon, about. 3.20 p.m.

As a result of the accident, Mr. P. C. Frost, the prominent crie- keter, who was a passenger in the car. is lying in, the Kowloon Hos- pital in a critical condition, suf- fering from serious head injuries.

According to a police report, the car was proceeding along Water loo Road towards Kowloon City when suddenly the steering gear became faulty. The car "skfaded, overturned and crashed into the wall of the nullah in the middle of the road.

So great was the Impact that Mr. Frest was hurled through the roof of the car and landed on his back on the bed of the nullau after a drop of about 10 feet.

Mr.. Schnabel after

having alighted from the vehicle went to the assistance of his companion.

Dr. A. P. Guterres who passed by shortly after rendered medical ald.

Cotonation Day will long be re- membered as one of the most wonderful days in the history of -The Colony. Bright as a Spring morning at Home dawned the morning of May 12. It was, how- ever considerably hotter than May day at home, and served to prove the wisdom of those who elected, to have the Military Review at an early hour.

Most of us were up with the lark and a huge crowd assembled at the Race Course, every seat on the two Grand Stands, being occupied, to see His Excellency, Mr. N. L. Smith, C.M.G., take the salute, as the re- presentative of His Majesty, the King.

After the review we found our- selves extremely hungry... but dell- clous snack breakfasts were being provided in all the boxes, and in the

dining room which we attacked with keen appetite.

Shortly after came the Corona. tion Service of Thanksgiving at St John's Cathedral, which looked) splendid decorated with flags and. panners, while red and white gla dlol and blue larkspur massed in ont of the chancel had a most patriotte effect.

I was lucky enough to be actually crossing the harbour at noon when the Royal salute was fired. It was a scene hever to be forgotten. We passed close under the bows of were H.M.S. Eagle and the decks filled with sailors in their white uniforms lined up at the rails and forming a ring all round the air- craft carrier. They stood with linked bands (as for Auld Lang Syne) while in the bows the Royal Marines were massed together with their bayonets flashing in the sun as the guns roared out the salute.

Then as the ferry sped past we saw all the white caps Ufted and waved for the three cheers which came to us faintly on the breeze.

All over Hong Kong, at the Club and at the Hotels were gay tiffin parties, and His Excellency the O.A.G. with Mrs. N. L. Smith and Miss Smith lunched at the Club after we had all latened (over the air) to the speeches made in the Cound Chamber.

After tin: when God Save the

over the harbour six planes were floodilt with orange lights across the front of their wings while two escorts which were flying behind the six planes were lit up with white light along the fuselage and wings. While over the harbour they dropped flares which burst into colours. After flying across the harbour two planes went back to Kat Tak while the rest flew, around the Island and New Territories, be- fore returning to the Air Base.

FINE FIREWORKS EXHIBITION

Aeroplanes And Fire Floats Entertain

Among the many major displays in connection with the celebration, the Areworks exhibitions contri- buted by the Japanese community in Hong Kong was one of the most thrilling spectacles, rivalling · any- thing of this nature that has been witnessed here in the past;

Between the hours of eight and ten last night no less than 100 eight and ten-inch rockets were shot up into the air from wharf No. 6 of the Kowloon . Godown, showering the sky with gorgeous colours.

I

Thousands of sight-seers had their attention auddenly drawn by the explosion of the rockets, ful lowing which there was a shower of sparkling fire of all colours.

Large crowds of people shifted their venue and ventured closer to the scene of the fireworks "display and very soon there was a surging throng on the piers and water- front, some of whom were fortun- ate to escape being pushed over the edge.

drunk most of us decided to fade away for a rest, in preparation for what the evening might bring

{

forth. The streets were thronged by crowds waiting for the Dragon Procession, but personally I intend to enjoy it in comparative penge to-morrow.

THE CORONATION BALE

The reception and ball held at Government House last night was a brilliant affair, and two thousand people were present. All the rank and fashion, and all the youth and beauty of the Colony passed through the ballroom where His Excellency and Mrs. N. L. Smith received their guests.

Brilliant uniforms of blue, gold. red, and white, lovely dresses and bright eyes gleamed beneath a my-" sad lights with kaleidoscopic effect that was dazzling.

The function was splendidly or- ganized, and in a very short time that vast crowd had passed through the ballroom and out into the big marquee on the lawn overlooking the harbour,

The grass was green as jade un- der the vivid lights which outlined the house, a gigantic crown flashed out between an equally big "G.R" while the trees sparkled with fairy lights of crimson, blue and orange, violet, yellow and white, like the jewelled trees in Aladdin's cave.

Never have I seen so many lovely frocks in one, short evening, and it would be quite Impossible to des- cribe them all. I must, however, meation just one worn by the hostess of the evening. Mrs. N. L. Smith received her guests in an exquisite picture gown of orchid taffeta, made in the graceful off- the-shoulder style with narrow shoulder straps holding up a charming falling sleeve, and with a glorious spray of orchids, Miss Smith looked very sweet in a white dress worn with a shoulder spray of red flowers and sashed with red to match.

The Band of the Royal Welch Fusiliers discoursed sweet music in the garden, and there was dancing

Supper was served just before midnight.

It was a wonderful finish to a thrilling and memorable day.

It is nice to think that even those in hospital were able to enjoy the Coronation, since the new Queen
