FOR CORONATION
City Turns Into Fairyland Of Multi-Coloured Lights
By this time next week Hong Kong will be in full Coronation garb and in this connection preparations have been under way for some weeks past although it was only a few days ago that the decorations took on a tangible form.
The scheme of decoration is practically similar to those which adorned the Island and mainland during the Silver Jubilee cele- brations, but this time they will be on a much more elaborale scale and apart from Governmental and business hongs, indivi- dual residents are taking a live interest and are having their houses either beflarred or decorated with multi-coloured Ughts, Over 100,000 electric bulbs com- ing effects will outline the Law prising between опс and two Courts building "on the west side millions candle-power will com- of which will be God Save The bine to transform the heart of the King, in red. Foreign affairs and defence will, it is expected, dominate the discussion at the coming con- ference, and the question of improving communications will also receive close attention.
Revision of the Ottawa agree- ments is not on the agenda and, as has been stated in Parliament, it has been decided that any modi-" fications, considered necessary can best be secured by separate nego- tiations.
The agreement between Britain and Canada was recently modified
in this way.

THE MONARCHY OF ENGLAND
Lecture By Rev. H.W. Baines
A very Interesting lecture on "The meaning and history of the Coronation Service" was given by the Rev. H- W. Baines at the St. John's Cathedral Hall yesterday evening to a large and apprecia- tive gathering, in the course of which he said;----
"TWO GREAT STRANDS" The monarchy of England is one of the oldest and has had the most. continuous history in the world: and England is fortunate in having kept its ancient Coronation service. Nowadays, the Coronation is the ratification of accomplished
fact. But certain features of the service, such as the Recognition by: the People and the Homage of the Peers. Imply that the King is at the beginning of his reign and that he is made King in and by the Coronation service.
In the Coronation service and its history we may find a story of two great strands, which, woven to- gether, have made up so much of English life; the relation of the monarchy to the people and the relation of both to the Church.
