Countess of former Natalia Brassov. who was for twenty-four hours the last Czarina, has been written by the Polish Supreme Court, states the "Even- ing Standard."

After years of struggling to re- claim her former property in Po- land from the State, the court has finally dismissed her case.

She now faces extreme poverty. Born the daughter of a wealthy Petersburg lawyer, Natalia Serge-

jevna married a Russian stock- broker named Mamont, but was divorced after three years.

Madame Chiang Kai-shek, as her friends know, has undergone a heavy strain by reason of the long touring undertaken by her in company with the Generalis sind. This was accentuated by the anxieties of Sian and by the unfortunate accident which led to the scorching of her arm by

A year later. however, the Czar revoked the expulsion order and allowed his brother to return to Petersburg. When Michael pre- sented his beautiful wife to the Czar he immediately made her "Countess Natalia Brassov," in order to remove the unfavourable Impression that his brother was married to a commoner. The beauty and kindness of her man- ners soon made Natalia the centre of Petersburg court fe.

But Natalia was to enjoy her brilliant "career for only a short time. The war broke out, and in 1917 Czar Nicholas II. abdicated. He renounced his rights to the crown in favour of his brother, the Grand-Duke Michael. With TC- volution Baring up. Natalia had thus suddenly become Empress of Russia.

But within twenty-four hours, before he was even officially pro- claimed Czar, Michael had to re- nounce all claims to the Russlan throne.

He was deported to Siberia and later murdered by the Bolshevists.

Natalia managed to escape to Poland, where she lived for some months on a large Romanov estate near Czenstochau.

In November, 1918, the Polish Government decreed disappropria- tion of the entire property of the former Russian ruling house. This made the Grand Duchess practi- cally penniless.

She sued the Polish Government for damages-but her late hus- band's signature to his abdication document defeated her.
