XI: The Church In England
(RY SCRUTATOR)
Gregory the Great (540-604), of the famous pua-"non Angli sed Angeli" (not Angles but Angels) sent. Augustine to Britain to the Anglo-Saxons, and his missionary enterprise made Britain for several centuries the centre of a very vigorous form of Christianity. In the reign of Edward I, with the blessing of Gregory VII, William the Norman made his invasion of Britain and stilt further established the influence and power of the Church of Rome. But in the year 1305 when the popes deserted Rome for Avignon where they remained until 1378 and became more or less a French Institution, England's interest in and sup- port of the papacy waned.
In 1331 she passed the Statute of Provisors forbidding the papacy to nominate the holders of Eng- lish livings.
