Teachers And Attendance
At Church
The National Union of Teachers. at a private session of their con- ference at Portsmouth, endorsed the refusal of Blackpool teachers to compy with the 'request of the local education authority that they should attend services at church' or chapel on six chosen days of the year with their puplis, states the "Daily Telegraph."
In a public statement the pre- sident. Mr. R. J. Patten, said: "The local authority in Blackpool has used putlle machinery and spent pubic money in carrying out a religious poll on a denomina- tional basis of the children of the Council schools of the area through their parents, although the schools which their children attend, are essentially undenominational. "This campaign in Blackpool has been, and continues to be, a compound of ignorance, prejudice and hostility which I accords with the religious and spiritual profes- sions of those responsible for it.
*To the members of the clergy and Non-conformist ministry in Blackpool, who have been at pains to attack the teachers, I would say quile blunt'y' that interference with the teachers in their proper professional domain will not be tolerated."

"But the authority has not stop- ped there. Not content with dividing the children into their various sectarian flocks, the teachers have been asked volun- tarily to submit themselves to the same process. The teachers have refused, and the conference in private session has endorsed their action.
"The authority recognises that it) has no
power to Instruct the teachers to co-operate in this part of the scheme, and repeated as- *urances have been given that there is no desire to exercise pres- sure upon the teachers. AIR TRAVEL IN AUSTRALIA
...Interesting data has just been compiled in connection with the development of Australian civil aviation. It was, of course, the slowness and inadequency of sur- face communication. between and sparsely-populated districts the nearest centres of supply, which led to the first post-war development of air transport in Australia.
It was in November, 1922, that Queensland's first regular air service was established by Qantas between Charleville and Cloncurry, In 1925 the service was extended to serve Camooweal. In 1927 came the opening of the Cloncurry Normanton service; while two years later the Camooweal-Char- leviile service was extended to Brisbane.
