EGYPT'S MOVE LABOUR UNREST IN WITHDRAWAL OF

FOR FREEDOM

Transitional Period Discussed

SHARP DIVISION

OF OPINION

Montreux, Apr. 36. The transitional period occupied the attention of the conference most of yesterday, but no agree- ment was reached by the delegates who were sharply divided, though more evenly than at Drst expect- ed. The discussion was again ad- journed for further study when the conference met to-day.

Britain, Portugal, United States and the Trish Free State support Egypt's desire for a twelve-year transitional period. Sweden and Denmark are also believed to be favourable. Italy, Greece and Bel. glum support the French eighteen- year proposal. France and Italy are referring to their Governments for further Instructions. Until the transitional period is agreed upon, progress in several other important questions is blocked.

The general commission discuss. ed the jurisdiction of national courts and appointed a sub-com- mittee to examine the question and made a further adjournment until Monday- Reuter.

Clydeside Strike: Kent Bus Service Held Up

World labour unrest is featured in cables from New York. London and Glasgow. The threat of American seamen and wireless operators to tie up shipping has been dispelled by a settlement at a conference attended by a representative of the National Labour Board. Meanwhile a strike is in full swing on the Clyde where the workers on the sister ship to the Queen Mary walked out, followed by similar seuión by employees of other yards.

The long drawn out motor dispute in America, which has spread to Canada, contlaues, though the situation holds out possi bilities of an early settlement.

Two thousand bas conductors and drivers are on strike in Kent, their main grievance being the poor living conditions. The em- ployers refuse to negotiate until the men return to work, but the Istter make a condition that those who did not join in the walk-out should be dismissed first!
