QUEEN MARY HOSPITAL OPENED

DR. WELLINGTON'S SPEECH Hon. Dr. Wellington, addressing the gathering, said:-

Your Excellency,"Lady Caldecott, Ladies and Gentlemen...

"The history of the movement

which culminated in the erection of the Queen Mary Hospital on this site commenced in 1925 when Bir Cecil Clementi realising that the

Government Civil Hospital had become obsolete directed that "a"scheme of reconstruction be prepared by the Director of Pub- Alle Works in consultation with the Principal Civil Medical Oficer and his chief officers,

Government

Bull In 1874 the Civil Hospital occupied a site in *Sai Ying Puh, one of the oldest and most crowded districts of the City of Victoria, The advantages of this alte were the conveniences it offered to the masses Uving in the 'neighbourhood and 'Its proximity to the University which made use of it as a 'training school for its medical students. The disadvan~ tages were numerous. During the winter months it was exposed to the cold winds blowing across the harbour. During the summer months it was subjected to all the heat and humidity of the South West mensoon but was de-

prived of the breezes which were out off by the mountain behind. The atmosphere was charged with smoke and grime from the slums adjacent and from shipping in the harbour only 250 yards distant. The constant noise was disturbing to the patients.

THE QUEEN MARY HOSPITAL Designed by the Public Works Department the new Queen Mary Hospital may be said to embody all the latest Improvements in hospital construction. From its inception in 1925 to its completion in 1937 the Public Works Depart nient have kept in close touch with the Medical Department and every endeavour has been made to de- sign and erect an institution which would meet the requirements of the medical situation. [

During the last two years the aite has been visited by a number of eminent medical and

pubile health experta Interested in hos- .pital construction and qualified to judge. All without exception have expressed, approval of the site and of the design. One who had travelled widely and who has a world wide reputation said it was the best hospital in the East. I have visited many countries and have seen many hospitals, and have no hesitation in saying, that; I have seen none better.

THE ARCHITECTS

Careful. consideration has also been given to the needs of the Nurses Training School. There' are lecture rooms and demonstra tion rooms in the north-west wing of the ground floor.

The requirements of the Radio-

logist in the matter of space have been fully met in the south west wing, ground floor. The walls and floors have been carefully in- sulated and everything is ready to receive radium and high power X-ray machines which form a normal equipment of every modern hospital and which are necessary to combat cancer, a disease causing the loss of so many lives in Hong Kong.

HOT AND.COLD WATER › Adequate arrangements have

been made for supplies of hot and cold water, for heating, for steri- laation and disinfection, for cook ing, for refrigeration. for artificial lighting, for telephonic communt cation etc. etc.

The scheme was submitted for criticism to the Medical Depart- ment, the Medical Faculty of the "University and the District Watch Committee.

DIFFERENCES OF OPINION There was considerable differ-
