Allow me to tell you how great is my respect for Macau and the sons of Macao. It was for that reason my Government sent; me. I wish to say how great is the Interest I take in the progress and development of Macao for after all she is the mother of all of us and all our efforts should be directed to helping her. That I can count on your assistance at all times. I am aware. Now may I recall two persons, who have meant so much to me and to this Club. It is with pain in my heart for these persons are no longer among us. I refer to Mr. Carlos Roza and Dr. Ozorio. My thanks to them.

Laudatory speeches were made by the "President of the Club Lusitano, Mr. Leo D'Almada, e

Castro, sen, and Senhor Laborinho, the Portuguese Consul, to which His Excellency suitably repliva.

Translations of the speeches are

given.

Mr. D'Almada said:- Senhor Barbosa after an absence from the East for a period of several years returns to us to-day once more Governor of Macho.

His successful administration during his two previous terms of office is still fresh in our minds.

It is but natural, therefore, that while fully recognising the value of his administration in Macao should remember him bent for what he has done for us in the neighbouring Colony. This Club, in particular, has good cause to remember Br. Barbosa and to pay him trblute, for it was through his Instrumentality that, at a time when the financial resources of this institution were unfavourable he assisted this institution very materially in tiding over its dif- ficulties.

We look forward with pleasure to the prospect of a long tenure of office with its attendant visits to Hong Kong when, we trust, Sr. Barbosa will honour this Club with his presence.

It is now my privilege to ask you to join with me in drinking to the health, success, and prosperity of our distinguished and lustrious guest and friend-Senhor Barbosa. | -(Applause).
