PLANS FOR CORONATION BROADCASTS

RELIGIOUS WAR IN

PHILIPPINES

Many Moro Outlaws And Soldiers Killed

Manila, April 7.

The outbreak of a religious war is believed to be possible in Lanao Province where twenty three Moro outlaws and an undis- closed number of Filipino soldiers were killed in severe fighting during the past three days.

Moro inhabitants at Lanao, who are of the Moslem faith, appear to believe that the outlaws are victims of persecution by the Christian Filipinos.

The situation is stated 10 grave and further reinforcements are being sent by the Army who have been clamped down by a strict censorship.

JOSEF LAMPKIN

RECITAL

Delightful Evening

"Of Music

To their credit, be it said, that Hong Kong music-lovers turned out in full force last night to hear the delightful Violin Recital given by Josef Lampkin. Given at very short notice, it was most gratify- ing to have such an eager res- ponse from the public. Not only did they all the ball, they stewed by their keen attention and loud and continued applause how much they enjoyed the Concert!

In response to their demands Josef Lampkin had to give no less than four encores, as well as a repetition of that strange and wonderful plece "The Wind," in which the difficult chromaile pas- sages were skilfully played.

For his first encore he gave the beautiful "Air on the G. String" (Bach) sweetly and tenderly play- ed. His second encore was the de-. licate "Romance Andalusian." by: Sarasarti. His third encore was an entirely new arrangement of that great favourite "Songs My Mother Taught Me" (Dvorak), (Cocinued on Back Page)

THE CAPTAIN'S FAREWELL

"We're here, Sir."

Goodbye, Sir

"Thanks and Good Luck!'

When Captain Cyril Coltart, B.N., relinquished his commiand of HMLS. Modway and the Submarine Flotilla, he was accorded a farewell which was as picturesque as it was sincere. The Beggars Are Coming To Town

Dear Sir,

TO THE EDITOR, "HONG KONG DAILY PRESS"

The "Franconia" has departed taking many wealthy and in- fluential passengers away. and it is nice to think that, while here they had a special cordon of police to protect them from beggars and vagrants

But what a refection on our administration that much precau- tions should be necessary,

And why is it that only visitors to the Colony are so honoured? We who live here, and pay expensive' rents and rates, áre surely entitled to similar protection.

41

Ask anyone who has to walk dally from the Star Ferry to the foot of Ice House Street how many times they have been pestered as they pass Anderson's Music Shop and Dolly Varden's window.

Ask any ladies who look into Lane Crawford's window how many times they have moved away to escape almilar attentions.

And we all know how impossible it is to go up Battery Path and across the garden of the Cathedral without being persecuted by- dirty vagrants.

These creatures drift into the Colony from Canton and other outlying districts and THEY DO NOT represent the respectable and hard-working poor of Hong Kong Hong and Kowloon.

But they sleep in the. Street Sleepers shelter (which is meant for the citizens of our Colony) and they use the public latrines, and they are spreading dirt and disease wherever they go.

One more question too, Mr. Editor please. The Police reports shew that vagrants are continually being deported, and just as con- tinually do they return, ⠀

11

Where do they get the money to pay their fares back to the Colony?

When we discover this source of supply PERHAPS it may be possible to keep them out.

Yours jeto..
