Gay Colours For Spring

"And Summer

PRE-VIEW

Molyneux for the spring and summer uses colour lavishly and not much black. Morning clothes are, simple and youthful in line. Uttle dresses go under straight jackets of varying lengths with loose backs

Yellow, beige, willow green, nayy blue, brown, are among the colours used for this style of dress. The shoulder line is straight and wide. Slim short skirts may be iron- pleated on to a plain hip yoke. Sleeves are bell-shaped Necklines orc open White piqué goes with navy blue. Searlet is put - with grey. Figured crêpes go under long black coats. With every two piece and three-piece "ensem- ble" the hat is worn on elaborately dressed hair.

For the evening Molyneux has rushed Into colour and rich materials, with masses of flowers

as trimmings. Taffetas, tulle, and lace are made into very full skirts, some having as many as 30 and 40 yards in them. Another style Is the slim dress with a side drapery and a loose tulle coat to go over it. Some of the dresses have belts, others have not. The bodice may be encrusted with flow- era; zinulas and hycinths are some of them Fruit in small bunches Is thrust into the buttonholes of tallored coats and is a trimming for hats. Special materials have been woven for Coronation aresses; they patriotic legends and symbols in the patterns. Striped materials imade evening dresses of rainbow brilliance. Evening wraps are made of slipper satin, taffetas. tulle, and ostrich feathers A long brown satin coat with a full back -goes with a slender pink dress. A pink satin coat goes with a pale blue. Schiaparelli has adopted butter- flies as an alternative decoration to flowers. Big red admirals spread their wings" on coat lapels and materials are printed with butter- les of many colours and sizes. Bees and birds are also to be found. Her silhouette is that of the hour- glass. The waistline is neat and tight. Shoulders are wide, so is the hemline of the skirt, There is a generous choice of colours and materials.

The fashionable evening head- dress and the latest evening hat are one and the same thing in de- sign, though they might be inter- preted

in different mediums if Uked.

This new creation is intended specially for the woman who wears her hair with a centre parting. To some degree the design follows on halo lines, and so gives the width across the bead that is often so becoming to the English type of face.

MATCH FROCK

The headdress is composed of kliten allver tissue or it can be made in stiffened tulle, lace, rib bon, or hair. In colour it should match frock or some accessory.

Another important point that will suggest itself to the debutante" or young hostess who may have to make a quick change into her evening frock, and can give little time to restore her coiffure after wearing a hat all day, is the smart, well-dressed look produced 30 easily. It is only necessary to pinch-up the waves on either side of the head and poise the head- dress to give a well-Anished-off look to the toilette. This will be found to be a great boon to many girl who live far from their hair- dresser.

So often the effect of a smart frock is spoilt by a colffure that Jacks neat finish. Hair in these days often demands more time and attention than dress.

At the cocktail or cinema party the same kind of headdress could be in a bright or darker fabric, and so worn as a theatre hat.

pleated frills around the hem and armholes. The girlish sash is of velvet in a rich red. This dress, chosen by Astrid Allwyn, 20th Cen-. tury-Fox player, is worn with a löng Cellini cape of velvet in the same shade as the sash.

For the theatre and restaurant, dresses are simple and straight, fitted to a high waistline in front, and the décolletage cut in a deep point front and back. The hem is finished with a simple frill or with several small frills one above the other. These are Edged with sequins which match the massed sequin bolero, or the sequin em- broidery on the revers of the tailored jacket. The straigth skirt may also be split to show a colour- colour being used to line the ac- ed taffeta petticoat, the

companying coat. Quile new is the trained evening gown with back fullness and a short Jacket with fluted basque at the back.

How To Carry The New Handbags

Handbags have acquired char- acter and distinction this spring. There is artistry of line and beauty of colour, in addition to a great variety of new, leathers and fabrics being used in making these essen- ⚫tial fashion accessories.

The handbag may do one of three things: match the ensemble exactly in colour, strike a, contrast- ing note in a harmonious Bhade that extends to the choice of shoes, gloves, belt and umbrella, or be in black or white.

Cinnebar red is one of the latest handbag leather colours; this is a soft red that contrasts well with many other shades. There is a new mahogany brown. Greens are varied in tone and need care in selection. There are the soft blue greens and those of the more golden type.

When a handbag is sedate and unassuming in design it is usually tucked under the crook of the elbow. Many of the new handbag designs are so attractive that the handbag is given more prominence. It is carried by a small safety strap slipped over the back of the hand in a way that discloses the beauty of clasp and fastenings and the design in which the leather or fabric is worked.

The strapped back is used for all kinds of envelope shapes as well as for the small pochette and may be found in practical designs in lea- ther large enough for the diary. and smaller papers. eq" often car-

ried.

Handbags of the dressier type are designed in many new 'shapes. There is the small shield, shape Victorian reticule, modernised in clear-cut outlines, with two small handles. Many of these bags, mo- fabric, silk, velvet or "corded silk delled in leather or some richer

have highly decorative top clasps, and are meant to be carried by the handles. There is just enough room for the fingers to take a comfor- table grip.

Although so much a part of the modern woman's fashion equip ment it is not always casy to carry a handbag with grace. For the shapes in fashion at the moment, perhaps the most pleasing way to manage a bag of medium propor- tions and smart in design is to pose it like a book, taking the base of the bag between the Angers and. thumb in the closed hand crooking the arm to the lip line-the dis- closed as a finish to the ensemble. tinction, of the bag is then dia Busy women are apt to slip in letters and other papers that spoil the silm compact look, and a vals gives longer life to the most periodical turn out at short inter- practical

Formal evening gowns have very low necks, with narrow shoulder straps. The skirts are fitted to the hips and have a wide circular flare, held out at the hem by ruchings of self material and by bands of massed nowers or multi-coloured ribbons. White, and pastel-colour ed chiffons and organzas are the materials. Faille and tapeta in full clear colours are also used for evening gowns with widely sweep- ing skirts and off-the-shoulders décolletages.
