DEPLORABLE SITUATION Never before in the history of the world has there been anything approaching the present deplor- able situation in regard to re- armament. Every Great Power 1s feverishly increasing ita · defence forces, and Britain's determination to spend 1,500. million pounds on a five-year naval, aerial, and failitary programme (equivalent. to about 25,000 milion Chinese dollars) makes one wonder what is to be the end of this wasteful expendi- Mr. Elliott said that social credit ture. That is what Great Bri- tain really hopes for, but in view of many disappolating efforts in this direction during the past six years, she considers it necessary to show the world that if peace can- not be secured by any other means, she is prepared to buy it in the way that even 'the most obstinate must understand. In other words, Britain's five-year armament plan l'seems a definite challenge to those nations which either flatly refuse. or are reluctant, to put faith in the League of Nations and in treaties aiming at the avoidance of war. Mr. Elliott sald that social credit was actually started by Major Douglas of London and that in the .course of a speech, Mr. Aberhart declared that he had had many enquiries from Australia and New Zealand as to how the system was working.

In conclusion, Mr. Elliott said that social credit would be a very good thing if they could carry it out to the letter but he feared that this was impossible. One of the pre-election promises made by Mr. Aberhart, so Mr. Elliott said; was that a social credit dividend of $20 per month would be paid to every man and woman who has attained the age of 21 years. 80 far this promise has not yet been. ruiniled and he doubted very much whether it would be possible to do so..

sure-footing in rearmament to increase the strength of defence

·was essential, and that was the reason why Great Britain was at present taking a serious step in that direction especially in the British Empire. By having

a sound footing in defence, the world would not see again the stupidity and horrors of war:

Col. Steeman also mentioned that countries who were in a state of bankruptcy were 'spending thou Bands of pounds every day and their aims were obvious. He added that the population of Hong Kong. was about one million, but less than five per cent, probably knew how to prepare themselves in times of gas attacks.

In view of Mayor Wu's fine record in Shanghai, inany pubile bodies here have petitioned to the Executive Yuan urging that the mayor should remain at his pre- sent office.

Mayor Wu returned here late last night from Nanking where he interviewed General Chiang Kai- shek, President of the Executive Yuen, and Mr. Wang Ching-wei, Chairman oʻthe Central Political Couneli, concerning his impending transfer to Canton.-- Union News*,
