Early Churches

(BY SCRUTATOR)

Following upon Apostles there were Prophets and Teachers, the nature of their positions within the fellowship was like that of the former. If their gift was good they were at liberty to exercise it everwhere, but they had no power, to compel others to listen, yet, if good, their pronnoncements were equally valid in all parts of Christendom, and not only in preaching but in matters of discipline as well. Inspiration to preach the word of God meant meant Inspiration to lead the Church in many lines,

others what they themselves had learned from the apostles, and the value of their work depended upon how faithfully they could reproduce. what they themselves had heard. Their primary function was to conserve, not to reveal, truth. Thus a definite line is drawn, in organis. ed Christianity, between Apostles and those who followed them in all succceeding ages. The Apostles, in certain schools of thought, have come to be regarded along with the Old Testament prophets, as being the sole recipients of the divine re- velation, Indeed. this is the view adhered to by the majority of the organised Christian Churches. The bishops and their successors, minis- ters, pastors, preachers, whatever

Bishops: The need was very early felt of someone to supervise and regulate congregational worship especially eucharistic services. We do not know definitely when these -services, began to be formal in character, but certainly before the "end of the first century the process of stereotyping had begun, When an Importance had once been made of form and order, a leader became necessary to see that they were carried out and so bishops were appointed to meet this need. In addition to their attention to re- ligious services they also received and dispensed aims Later there was added to their responsibi- they may be called, are simply the CHAPEL OF THE RESURRECTION from the Christian Science Text- lities that which was formerly authoritative exponents pr the the work of apostles only, the apostolic truth.. AND NOTES

The Lenten Mission

Every year at this time there is a "Mission" in the Catholic Cathe- dral. This consists of a series of sermons and other religious exer- cises, which are intended to recall people to their duty to God, and to prepare them for the worthy. reception of the sacraments at Easter time. This year the prea- cher is Rev. Hugh McNulty, B.,' who has come from the Philippine" Islands for this purpose." This, is Fr. McNulty's second visit to Honz Kong for the Leniten Mission, as he

was

the preacher on a similar occasion fourteen years ago. In the interval he has been all the time in the Philippine Islands, where he has worked in various places among both the native and. the foreign population. The Mis- sion devotions, which begin each evening at 6 o'clock, continue” in the Cathedral until next Wednes day. Each year the crowds that attend the church on the occasion of the Mission are most remark- able, especially when it is remem Dered that many have to come trom a considerable distance. The

custom of holding a Lenten Miscion exists in Catholle churches in all · parts of the world.
