His difficultles began, when it was suggested that he might like to take husky Jane Withers along to see the first showing of "Lloyds of Londor," in which he played a part.
The Lonely Woman
The secret of a woman who lived alone for fourteen years was taken to ber grave at West Ham Ceme- tory.
The only words on the brass plate of the coffin were "Harriet Jemina Clarke. Died January 27, 1937: Aged 76."
M-G-M, Freddie's employers, and Twentieth Century Fox, Jane's bosses, and even Freddie's Aunt Cissie, thought it was a good idea, But Freddle had other plans.

For the first time slace, the modern detective story came into being, a new formula has been in- vented. Audiences to-day are to be allowed to play the detective in pictures.
So declares Edmund Lowe, who is creating the latest detective character on the screen, and sees in the story a possible revamping of the whole field of mystery plays.
In Under Cover of "Night, which introduces the actor as Christop her Cross, scientific sleuth, the

The new screen play is by Betram Mlhauser, and deals with zertes of murders among learned group in a great univer- sity. Scientific laboratories, odd experiments, chaseny thrills of sudden crimes, and the deduction by which the mystery is solved by a small, rubber ball, are unusual elements in the story, which George Beltz directed for Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer.
Florence Rice, who scored in Women Are Trouble, plays the heroine opposite Lowe, who has been outstanding in several detec-. tive roles. The cast includes Sara Haden, Dorothy Peterson, Henry Daniell, Theodore von Eitz, Nat

This has always been regarded as the most rellable formula, both for Action and screen. 8lr Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories are the perfect model, and these in turn were based on Edgar Allan Poe's detective Dupin, who was Inspired by Zadig, the Arablan master of deduction, a character created by Voltaire.

STREET SCENE
"Street Scene," picturized from the famous Pulitzer Prize play by Elmer Rice. will be presented by Samuel Goldwyn at the Majestle Theatre to-day. In directing the story of a warm-hearted romance and a passionate murder against the living screen or a city street, King Vidor makes of ""Street Scene" his most ambitious effort since "The Big Parade."
"The new formula we are trying Is not exactly the reverse of this, but, just as we like in modern plc- tures to have the audience laugh with the comedian rather than at him, so we are having the au- dience detect with the detective."
The principal value of the idea, Lowe believes, may lie in that every person, at one time or an- other, has mentally dramatized himself or herself as being a detective.
