PAGE FOR THE CHURCHES
RELIGION: PERSONAL AND IMPERSONAL
IV: The Book Of The Acts
(BY SCRUTATOW).
Events after that move with a quickness and suitdenness which make a scientific study of the perlod very disicult. With the first forty years of the first Chris- tian century the Church had com- pletely changed from being a Jewish sect to a religion with unl- versal pretensions. Instead of there being
authoritative one Church in Jerusalem, there exist- ed two independent churches. one in Jerusalem and one in Antioch and when Saul of Tarsus became Paul the Christian it was to the religion of the Antioch Church, or, as Dean Inge puts it, “It was to the Christianity of Stephen, not to that of the Christians of Jerusalem. that he was converted."
The history of the divisions be- tween these two rival churches is largely lost but we read that Peter, the head of "the law-abiding" Church at Jerusalem WILL com- manded in a vision to admit the Gentile Corncltus to the fellowship of his church (Acts X: 20) and finally, we read that "they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that &rose about Stephen... spake unto the Gre- clans. preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number be- Heved and turned unto the Lord." When these new happenings reached the ears of the Church, in Jerusalem. Barnabas, a member of the Jerusalem Church though a Hellenist, was sent to enquire into the state of affairs, but instead of returning with his report to his superiors, he was converted to the Pauline point of view and remained with the Apostle for a year in Antioch But the Jerusalem Church with its Judaising policy. followed the work of the Christians in Antioch attacking what they called their herestes. This process went on until a situation arose which called for the first Council of Christians which took place in the" year 49 A.D. At this Counell the Pauline point of view virtually triumphed and the Jewish party forsook the rigorous application of the Law of Circumcision as a con- dition of admission to the Chris- Ulan fellowship, and they expressed their willingness to admit the Gentile whose life shewed evidence of the sincerity of his conversion.. PAUL SETS 'OUT
that the 'Son of God' whom he worshipped might rapidly become as unreal da any of the other delcles of the Gentile religions, not a vital historical character, but a mere figment of traditional im agination, or simply an article of a creed. It was at this point that the Gospels came to the rescue of the Church which was struggling to maintain a precarious foothold throughout the Roman Empire, They were necessitated by gradual
the the
diminution of apocalyptic hope, and the destruc- tion of the Church in Jerusalem where that hope lived most fer- vently, and by the tremendous in- crease of the number of Gentile Christians.
ORDER OF COMPOSITION
Mark, Matthew, Luke, John, that, so far as we know, is the order or their composition When we
bis
read the words of their narratives we feel that we have before us the authentle message of Jesus. Mark is especially significant for chronological accuracy and for his reverent delineation of our Lord's character both as human and as divine. Matthew and Luke who were influenced considerably by the mystic doctrines of Paul fol- low Mark, and where they differ from him they tend to substitute the influence
indwelling
of the
Christ for the vivid real Impres- sion which his historical character makes upon us. This difference was appreciated even during the Arst century and its effects be-
came apparent. With the passage
of the years, the mystical element, the 'demigod' Christ began to ap- pear in popular conception, and S. John wrote his gospel to combat this tendency. His gospel em- phasises the humanity of our Lord but succeeds simultaneously in making his divinity more real and тоге august, Christ before the world was and will be when the world is no more. While both Mark's gospel and John's are essentially reverent, the difference between them is that Mark's 19 historical in Its emphasia, and John's is experiential

The following are the Services
Encouraged with this success Paul set out to convert the world of his day by preaching to all men that the Jewish Messiah had come for the week at Emmanuel. Mis- and that now Gentile and Jewsion Church, 218 Nathan Road,
alike could enter the Kingdom of God. The strict Jews hated this, but Paul persevered proclaiming to all men, to the bellevers in the Aristotelian metaphysical “unknown' God," to the worshippers of Isik and Cybele, as well as to the be- llevers in the resurrection of the mythological Horus, the all-sum- ciency of Jesus Christ. Within a century, the Jewish Law, the Greek Philosophy and the mystery. re- ligions had all become "school- masters" leading men to Christ.
Paul did not at önce, however, outgrow the apocalyptical position,
the beller in the immediate second- coming of Christ, which was held In the Jerusalem Church, and for that reason perhaps, his epistles do not relate very many detalls concerning the earthly life of Christ, "but
the passage of the years delaying the second-coming caused the apocalyptic element in his belief to recede into the back- ground of his mind and his preaching. His emphasis came more and more to dwell upon the Indwelling Christ. Each new be llever became a resurrection into the Kingdom of God which is on earth as it is in heaven", For Paul and his Gentile converts the Gospel is not so much the whole life of Christ as it is the final act of his life. The Resurrection eclipses all else.
It soon became apparent to the Apostles that the Church would survive them and that it had be- fore it an earthly existence of which, at the most, they could only witness the beginning. When Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romana in 70 A.D. and the Jewish state was obliterated the Church became almost entirely Gentile in its composition and there arose a real danger for the ⠀ non-Jewish Christian who had no racial pre- possession for the Divine Messiah,
