Hopes were aroused that a solu- tion was at hand, by the report of Mr. Edward Baker, Shire Coun- -cillor of Gunning, N. S. W. After chasing it for over two hours, and frequently wound it with harpoons, they finally drove it into a pool about 3 feet deep. Manoeuvring their boat alongside the shark they were attempting to fasten a rope to it, when two other launches which had been in the hunt bumped Into Hensworth's boat and knocked 'Alan overboard.

The shark attempted to get at Alan but Raymond gripped it by the tall and hung on desperate- ly while Alan scrambled back into the boat, Suddenly the shark turned, and fastened its teeth on Raymond's left forearm, until his father killed it with an axe.

The boy was brought ashore, and hurried to the Milton Hospital where he was admitted, and twelve stitches were inserted in the wound.

HEART REPAIR BY GRAFTING

Remarkable Results From "Research

Remarkable results of operations on the heart have been reported occasionally in recent years, and in the current issue of The Lancet" there appears an authori- tative account, introduced by Lord Dawson of Penn, of what has, in fact, been accomplished by British surgeons as a result of investiga tion at the Royal College of Bur- geons' research farm at Downs. Kent, and at the special clinic at the Lambeth Hospital, London.

Above all other organs the heart must have an adequate blood supply tor its actively working muscle. If the vessels of the heart which supply it become narrowed as a result of disease serious dia- orders occur, of which the severe malady called angina pectoris may be taken as an example. It has been found that if extra blood can be brought to the heart by another route a great measure of recovery is possible.

A new means of improving fuel economy of aircraft in fight is be ing tried by the Air Ministry. It enables a saving of from 10 to 12 per cent. in fuel to be made, and so has a marked effect upon the maximum range of aircraft, both civil and military.

The Instrument is known as the Cambridge indicator. It works by continuously analysing the exhaust gas from the engine and expressing the result in the pilot's cockpit as a rawo of petrol to air. Its weight is 1b. 11oz., and it uses current from the aeroplane's 12 volt battery.

The pilot has a mixture control and, according to the conditions of fight, he can keep the fuel con sumption down to а minimum Engines give their maximum po wer with a mixture a good deal richer than that which gives the best economy. When the mixture control is left entirely to the pilot's Judgment there is apt to be a large variation in consumption, and therefore in range.

CONSUMPTION TESTED A bombing formation, whose consumption ngures were Laren, showed a variation of 40 per cent.

the conditions under which the engine is running all the time the aeroplane is in the air, and the pilot can meet the alterations de- manded immediately.

In the past the mixture control in Air Force machines has been used in a somewhat cruce manner. The plot is Instructed to weaker the mixture until the engine re- volutions show a drop of a given amount. There has been tendency, too, for plats to keep the mixture always on the rich side owing to the belief, which is founded in fact, that the richer mixture gives a cooler engine
