Canton: A virtual famine is ex- isting in Canton as a result of the acute shortage of rice, the prin cipal diet of the local populace.

Past Year's Work Reviewed
The annual meeting of the Kow- loon Union Church was held at the Church Hall last night when Rev. J. D. MacLean, the chaplain of the Church, was in the chair.
After the opening hymn "The Church's one Foundation" which was followed by a prayer by the Vlear, the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
The reports of the past year's work and activities of the Church were then read out.

DIES HERE
Mr. M.E.H. Wells
The death occurred at the War Memorial Hospital on Monday Edward
night of Mr. Matthew Howey Wel.s. of the Shanghai Dock Company, at the age of 69
years.
It will be remembered that an earlier report was published to the effect that while Mr. Wels was on the way down here from Shanghai by the 3.3. Corfu, he developed acute appendictis and an opera- tion was performed on the high seas by the ship's surgeon, assisted by a doctor who happened to be travelling on the vessel at the time.
Upon arrival of the Liner here, Mr. Wells was transferred to the War Memorial Nursing Home where he passed away on Monday night...

BAD WEATHER MARS
LANDING PLANS
Great disappointment was felt by the pilgrims on board the liner Empress of Russia, who were un- able to land on Bandian Island. 100 miles from Hong Kong on their intended visit to the tomb of St. Francis Xavier. According to the liner's local agents, the attempt to land was abandoned on account of bad weather.
A cable, received from the vessel's commander, stated that the Empress of Russia arrived at the Island and anchored at Bhito Bay, on the northern side, at 7.38 am. on Sunday, when, it was found that weather conditionK were unfavourable for the landing of the passengers, there being a south-east swell and rough sea.
The liner waited for more than two hours in the hope of the wea- ther conditions improving, and, ac- 'cording to the captain's message, iled from Sancian Island at 9.49 am for Manifla.
RAINFALL FIGURES
The Royal Observatory reports that 88 inches of rain was record- ed for the 24 hours ended at 10 am. yesterday, bringing the total since January 1, up to 281 inches against an average of 1.27 inches.
