Sailor Hats To Come

With The Spring

Little "säilor" styles in hats al- Ways come in with spring-time, but Madame Suzy has some new and piquant notions. The fancy boater is going to be a chic idea in the 1880 spirit with floral trim- mings and low crowns. Brims vary from frankly 'flat to muffin ridged ones, and both follow the line of crown ättings on a short dimen- sion of elegant shape.

A

of single-brimmed

shape fancy white straw in this category drops. a shadow over the eyes at a right-angle and shows a bind of black gros-grain to

correspond

with one at the top of crown slop- ing, as it were. In semi-high flow- er-pot fashion, with a single dark side red rose perching on one centre front. It is called "Dame à la ruse.".

Other fancy boaters have bun- ches of flowers that dip brims and backward straight forward

above the nape. Take briar rose bunches without follage as an ex- ample on black bengale for smart shape which is given a change from lowers to a bow arrange-

ment of white cut quills. This is posed across the centre front above another back and front sloping brimmed black bengale shape.

Short crowns apply to double brims with mudin ridges as well as those that are completely fat and rigid. Both have a Spanish air, with ure in black ciré straw of and soutache cording persuasion the other intended for bankok, bengale. "paper panama,” or ane of the new fancy stiff straws. The former is given a crown bind of red velvet ribbon shooting out at the back in two thin narrow lines. Side alottings in the latter take a chin strap with green pom-poms,

The Spanish Idea is not over- done, but achieved in an amazing- ly smart manner by Madame Suzy, who takes another characteristic motif for a "tambourine" beret. Interesting, too, is an Iranian beret of machine-stitched royal blue felt with a rolled-up outline beneath a

which designed crown.

LANE, CRAWFORD, LTD.

The

latest fabrics show new methods of adding streaks and splashes of all colours to dark weaves. Stitchery gives an imprès- ston of different shadings; a streak running through a material gives a similar effect. Braids in old and new composition, like fringes and strange borderings, suggest a col- from our story. Embroideries, soutache to sequins, have been re- stored to the favour they enjoyed at the beginning of the century.

New York, English and French designers exploited to advantage many self-coloured embroideries in the early autumn. The vogue was

taken up qulekly into a medley of lovely colours in wool-work, beads, glamorous gems and sequins, so al- ready is it a season in which trim- mings, weaves and handwork play a part. Dusted gold and silver weaves introduced in black and dark woollen materials are still popular. These gleaming touches do much to relieve the deadness of black, and yet allow its note of. distinction to remain. A black en- semble of wool flecked with gold or allver-dust can be worn at all times and places. With a plain coat of fabric or fur and a satin cap it is smart from the lunch hour til supper or cinema party.

For evening wear the all-black satin frock can now have a little embroidered jacket of chenille and soutache, studded with

bright

pends. Short basqued coatees are attractive in stripes of shaded sequins. The newer ways of treat- ing sequins and coloured em- broidery is always gay and pleas- ing, specially in these little coatees,.. and there is nothing garish or over-dressed about them.

Advance model for spring-hat of rough black straw trimmed with mimosa.

'LAMB" COST

In spite of shorter skirts for day time, costumes for the cock- tall hour still show ankle-length skirts, formal accents of pleat- ing, and the use of printed lame, such as is used on this-jacket- frock in golden tan sheer crepe, included in the spring wardrobe of Gloria Stuart, 20th Century-Fox player: Pleated panels, ed- ged by lame, trim both the back and the front of the skirt,-and similar panel is used at the back of the three quarter length jac- ket. The bodice is of gold lame, printed in rich orange and cop- per tones.

Those Fish-Coloured BLACK AND ORANGE!

Hats

To remind the audience that some of the colours in a collection of American hata shown in Lon- don were inspired by tropical fishes, a tank full of .Dsh was placed on a table in the centre of

the room.

A colourful new suit was worn recently by Madge Evans. The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer actress visited the studio wearing an en- semble of black and the new burnt orange shade called Indian sum- mer. The tailored black skirt was topped by the bright jacket with a high collar of black "Persian lamb. With it Miss Evans wore. gauntlet gloves and a smart toque of matching fur.
