Veteran Missionary's Death
The Rev. Samuel Evans Meech, for 31 years a missionary in the Peking district of China, died on January at Marlborough, Wilt- shire, in his 92nd year.

Enquiries at the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce yesterday elicited the information that an acknowledgment has been received from the China Associa- tion, London, of the joint cable sent by the China Association (Hong Kong Branch); Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce; representatives of the Chinese Australia, Methodist Ladies Col- community and Unofficial Mem- lege.-B. The death has occurred at Gingham-street, S.W.. of Sir Frederick Henry Arthur Des Voeux at the age of 79.
Formerly a Major in the 6th Dragoon Guards (Caribineers), he served in the Afghan war, the South African war, and the Great War. He succeeded his father as seventh baronet in 1914.

When he went to China in 1871 the voyage took 60 days. There were no railways, and Mr. Merch had to travel to Peking by cart.
Born in Sherborne, he married Miss Edith Prankard at Peking in 1872. She died in 1903.
