The most serious local railway disaster since 1931, when a train was derailed near Taipo resulting in 11 deaths and many persons being injured, occurred on Saturday when fire broke out at 3.10 p.m. on board the Kowloon-Cantou express while it was between Shek Lung and Cantab. The train left the Kowloon Railway Station at 12.45 p.m.

The outbreak, the cause of which is believed to have originated from an explosion of sulphuric acid, concealed in a lavatory, occurred in the second coach of the train and involved the following two coaches before the train was stopped,

PANIC-STRICKEN PASSENGERS

Pandemonium followed the outbreak and the panic-stricken passengers, all of whom were Chinese, rushed about the coaches mg to escape through the doors and windows. The train guards had their lands fully occupied in their attempts to calm the passengers.
