CHELSEA AT HIGHBURY

Arsenal Wizard Shows His Best Tactics

KIRCHEN SCORES TWO GOALS

As a score, four goals to one is convincing enough. There was not, however, that marked difference in, the merits of Arsenal and Chelsea in this annual Highbury duel, writes a Home cor- respondent. In the end Chelsea loft the field thoroughly subdued, but I pay them this tribute: until the fierce pace they' them- selves had set began to burn them up they looked as dangerous a Ardenal.

ין

If ever staying power won a match it did this one-stamina, plus the genius of one player, Alex James. Has football ever known a parallel the James case? Out of the game for two months becams it was believed he needed long rests in the twilight of a great career, the little Scot returned to Arsenal's side 10 days ago and played a leading part in a 5-1 triumph. at Portsmouth.

1

I wrote then that there were considerable spells when James seemed to be walking through the game but, with all his ap- parent leisureliness, an acute brain was always scheming to un- Palance the defenders with the unexpected thrust. So it was against Chelsea, with this difference: James. in the first half, saw Kirchen and Drake caught in Chelsea's offside trap times without number. Moreover, a goal by Oakton at the 39th minute threatened to give Chelsea the moral advantage of a Half-time lead. James decided to strike.

Almast for the first time he Joined in the attack and from his old familiar position of inside-left toffcially he was inside-right) he corkscrewed his way through a de- fence that had expected the or- thodox forward pass.

In a dash James was in front

of Woodley, but the shooting angle

MODERN

MONKEY FASTS

Animal That Bit

Its Master

A strange story has been nar- rated by Rahman bin Gempal, a rich Malay land owner of Banir, who went to the General Hospital, Tapah, recently. He was bleeding profusely from a monkey bite. which was several inches long and. quite deep.

Rahman had a pet monkey, which was caught in the jungle and brought up on the bottle. He was given it when it was a baby and has brought it up, he says, with much care and dimculty for the past five years. It grew up nicely and knew all the household. Ramdan being the fasting month, the monkey also had to fast, as no food was provided for in the day time.

On Hari Raya and the following two days all feasted and revelled in rich foods and also the pet. After this festivity, some folks fast for a few daya.

Rahman, out of pity, took some extra food he had, to feed the monkey, contrary to customary feeding on fasting daya. It took a dislike at once, chattered and grinned and bit its master's hand.

What Rahman thinks is that the monkey did not believe in eating when its master was fasting. The monkey was clubbed and killed on the spot.

PERFECTLY PLANNED

A perfectly planned goal, and a happy reminder that the age of the dribble is not yet past. Also it served as a sharp reminder to Chelsea of the grave risks of using offside tactics when a craftsman like James is on the other side.

Thereafter they abandoned off- side as a checking move, but they could not check James, who vir- tually settled the struggle with an- other wonderful swerving run and a back pass that Davidson crashed Into the net-a repilca of the first goal

Arsenal, after fighting every Inch of ground, then established de- finite superiority that produced two Kirchen goals and made the Anal score look lop-aided. But, as I have said, Chelsea had cried enough some time before the Anish

The match was lifted from the commonplace by the goals that James made. To most onlookers, however, it must have been an un- pleasing spectacle. There was far too much whistle. for which the players, not the referee, were to blame.

I had hoped the day was gone when these, "Derby" games must be fought in an atmosphere of bitter, animosity. There were far too many fouls, some, I regret to say, deliberate fouls, in this latest clash of London rivals.

V

SOUND DEFENCE

It was a pity Chelsea could not stay the full course. In the first half their forwards played splendid football against a brickwall de fence, and in this period Argue and Burgess compared more than favourably with Arsenal's inside wing forwards. But there was al- ways one very marked difference in the sides.

Whereas Drake, in spite of a painful shopider injury, made him- self a rare innsauce to Craig and the backs, Mills was scarcely ever seen as Chelsea's leader. In the aft and on the ground Roberts was his master from opening kick to last.

Arsenal were stronger too, in the long run on the wings. The powerfully built Kirchen seemed to develop double the amount or energy of any other player in that trying and tiring last half-hour. Ella scoring successes were well de- Berved.

BODY CONTROL BY SMALL GLAND

The theory that the increased prevalence of duodenal ulcers in the modern world might be due to the greater nervous and mental stralo under which we live was discussed by Professor E. Mellanby. secretary of the Medical Research Council. when he lectured at the Royal Institution London, recently on "Chemical Messengers of the Body."

It had been suggested. Professor Mellanby stated, that there was some connection between the "posterior lobe" of the pituitary gland beneath the brain and such ulcers; and the theory about ner- vous strain would, hé thought. bring "some kind of sense" into the suggested connection.

Professor Mellanby also referred to the "life saving" use of a par- ticular extract from the pituitary in cases of hemorrhage after chlid-birth,

F

ACTIVE FITUTTARY » Ni In all, he mentioned eight different substances, all of which are known to be manufactured within the body by the pituitary and which controlled such varied functions as growth and the pro- duction of sugar by the body, Al- though the functions of the pitul- tały were not normally of a life- and-death character, all there substances were now being used by doctora to carry out thelr specific functions, he added.

To illustrate the control of growth exercised by the pituitary, Professor Mellanby showed & photograph of a boy of 18 who stood 8 feet 4 inches and weighed 28 stone. In the photograph the boys father, who. Professor Mellan- by explained, was only an inch under six feet, could be seen stretched to his full height and | still failing, by some four inches,

to reach to his son's shoulder.

After an X-ray photograph had been taken to aid his doctor's diagnosis, the boy had picked up the photographer under his arm and walked out with him from the consulting room This condi tion was due to over-activity of part of the pituitary,

"There is hardly a physiological function of the body," he stated, which is not influenced. in one way or another, by one of the ¡chemicals produced by the cells in "this very small gland at the base
