INTERFERENCE WITH FOREIGN
SHIPPING
NEW TURN OF EVENTS IN SPAIN
Britain Takes Serious View
Of Incidents
London, January 5.
The-Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony, Eden, returned to London. yesterday and with his expert advisers he has under consideration the new turn of events in Spain. "In particular a serious view"is taken of the fact that British shipping has been interfered with on the high seas and all necessary measures will be taken, to prevent such interference outside the three-mile limit by vessels of either party engaged in Spain.
Diplomatic persuasion is regarded here as the regular and established method for averting repetition of incidents such as moles- tation of the Blackhill and Etrib, two British vessels, which have recently been interfered with while engaged in legitimate trade. A protest is being lodged with the Bargos authorities in regard to the "Blackbill, and immediately after the Etrib incident a British des
trayer proceeded to Cadiz with letters of protest addressed to the local naval authorities.
These letters have been prompt- ly acknowledged and coples of patrol orders of insurgent naval forces have been handed over. On examination there were found to contain satisfactory Instructions 'concerning the attitude towards British shipping in the Straits of Gibraltar.
It is understood. that the Etrib was mistaken for a Netherlands ship which is said to have been under suspicion. It is pointed out that the Etrib was not boarded.
